“IF YOU CAN ONLY LIFT ONE FINGER YOU STILL CAN POINT THE WAY!”

November 19, 2010

When doctors told me a few weeks ago that I would never walk again or have the use of my hands, except for one finger which I use to type my blog, I was devastated. I felt sorry myself for a few days, and then as I was checking out FACEBOOK I ran across artist/photographer “Lezlie Sokol”s page and saw this cloud painting of hers that moved me to tears. It made me think about a song I once wrote and reminded me that there is always hope and if you can only lift one finger…you still can point the way!

I’M AT MY BEST WHEN I’M DOWN
Words and Music by Artie Wayne

My back’s against the wall and I’m down to my last dime
I swear I can’t recall when I’ve had a harder climb
But like a rubber ball I’ll bounce back every time…and
I’M AT MY BEST WHEN I’M DOWN

I know when I’ve been used like a steppin’ stone
Battered and abused…left out here on my own
But I don’t feel I’m used, only feel I’ve grown more profound…
I’M AT MY BEST WHEN I’M DOWN

I’ve had men try and break me…women try and shake me
At times I let ‘em take me for a ride…
But when the fantasy wears thin and reality steps in
You gotta’ go within…’cause there’s nothin’ left outside.

But I’ll rise above the crowds of darkness and despair
And though I see dark clouds I know there’s a sun up there
Drums of courage beating loud and there’s victory in the air
All around…hear the sound…feel the ground…and
I’M AT MY BEST WHEN I’M DOWN.

Artie, you do inspire. This post came exactly when I needed to read it and I have no doubt that your energy will help many others ‘keep on keepin’ on’.
    Much love. xox

  2. Artie, those who best understand the meaning of I’M AT MY BEST WHEN I’M DOWN Good is the One inside of each of us that gets us up off the ground to that higher place.
But know that everything in life is not a mountain top experience and sometimes we’re in the valley. But the valley can be tough on us … But the valley is where the flowers grow (my pastor did a sermon on that) never forgot it.

The valley is where the hard times are, it tests our faith, and our mettle in the process. How we go through that depends on wether you let it beat you up and tear you down or like the flower you use it to grow beyond the circumstance.

Artie, I get the feeling from you and the words you put to song tells me you’ll rise above it all.

I did as well, briefly in 2006 I had a triple bypass, came out above that. And in January 2010 another triple bypass and they thought I was going to die. But I’m alive and God pulled me out of the valley big time and as you rightly acknowledged Him, OF COURSE THANKS TO GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW! No matter where the winds of life blow.
My friend, you will be in my prayers and I look forward to your getting back on top of the mountain.
    Bless you

    Tony

  4. Paul Payton Says:

Artie, I didn’t know either; at first I thought this was a dispatch from several years ago! I’m so sorry to hear this, and will send all good wishes to you.

    Good luck,
    Paul

  5. Joe Nelson Says:

Pretty much what Country Paul said… knowing where you’ve been thought I thought this was about your botched operation from a number of years back where even getting the use of that one finger back was considered a miracle. I had no idea something new was going on. I’m sorry to hear this… but it seems like the last word has never been heard. You’re always full of surprises – God willing there’s another one waiting to knock this one out. God bless.

    Artie,
Fortuneately, you are living in a miracle time, when many new discoveries are changing what doctors saiod yesterday…many things they said couldnt be done they are doing today…
so hang in there, and you do “indeed” point the way!

    Best,
    Steveo

  7. Sam Cooper Says:

    Artie,
My thoughts are with you. You’ve always been an inspiration—that has to do with your heart and your mind, not your limbs. Please know that if I can help you with something, I’m on it.
    Sam

    Artie,

you always have and will continue to “point the way” for many people who have been and will be lucky enough to have crossed your path..

  9. Dear Artie,
I´m in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, right now and just checked in to see this piece. Like the person above, it is so timely and uplifting in reminding me of truth. It seems when I get in a valley, down, it is when I have the most clarity of life, of God´s purpose and then realize the temptations off the path when flying high. I have never seen your limitations only your gifts. They still outshine any deficits and always will because that is who you are.
To quote our dear friend, Paul Williams: When God closes a door, He opens another, but the time in the hallway´s a bitch!

  10. Wedigo Watson Says:

Artie, very inspiring article. The occasional times we’ve spoken, as well as in our e-mail correspondence, you’ve always been so positive and uplifting that I had no idea of how serious your situation is. I’m learning so much from you. Thank you.

  11. Happy Thanksgiving Artie!

  12. Not sure about your health situation but know that “Aint no Mountain High enough” that you can’t climb. You are still living and breathing and we don’t die that easy. It’s just another door for you to get through and you’ve opened many. I’m praying for you as so many are. You will be fine, I know you will be fine!

  13. Dee Trane Says:

    Artie,

After reading everyone’s comments, never doubt what an inspiration
you have been to those who are fortunate enough to meet you and know you.
Continue to inspire, create and teach ….Know that you are loved !
    Always,
    Dee

  14. Gary Theroux Says:

Like George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” I don’t think you realize, Artie, just how many lives you’ve touched, hearts you’ve spoken for and spirits you’ve lifted in your life so far. When I say “we’re all praying for you,” rest assured that the “we” I’m speaking of is a vast multitide of thankful admirers. You’ve got a long, long way to go before you sleep.

  15. Todd Everett Says:

Artie: like he others, I had no (well, maybe a slight) idea. Sounds and looks like you’re already doing your best to rise above the situation.

Don’t know whether you’re too nice to put up with this stuff, or too ornery. Maybe a little of each. Keep on keepin’ on, and you will continue to grow, as I did (albeit from a far less debilitating situation).

  16. Alan Says:

    My friend,
Ever since the Warner Bros. days, when you got me so many cuts on my songs (as well as sometimes helping me improve them), you’ve appeared to be almost “superhuman”.

Now, all these years later, as you face health & mobility issues that would stop many people, & actually turn them into tools for uplifting & empowering yourself, you still manage to create the same illusion.
So I hope you forgive me if I was a little slow to grasp in my heart the reality of your pain, & your mental & physical challenges. (I’m leaving out “spiritual” because I know you levitate daily…)

But I do get it now, Artie, & it gives me an opportunity to say what I hope you already know: I love you, your strength, your spirit, your empathy; and I’m proud to call you my friend. I wish you many more years of productivity, & pointing the way!

  17. Terri Fricon Says:

    Dear Artie:

You truly are an inspiration. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Lots of healing light coming your way from TN.

    Love and hugs, Terri xx

  18. Phil Milstein Says:

    Hi Artie,

You are a king, and we need you. So, please hang in there for as long as possible, even if you only have the one finger to hang from!

    Love you live,
    –Phil M.

  19. 'Lezlie Sokol' Says:

    My dear sweet Artie,

Like a star in the midnight sky, your love was there to guide me… Sound familiar? You may have written the music and these words for someone very special to you once upon a time, but now, we all sing them back to you. You have touched our hearts and anyone who has ever had the privilege of meeting you and getting to know you at all has been forever changed for their betterment.

When you first emailed me and asked me to call you about the clouds and told me your story in detail and shared with me my small part in it, I, too, was moved to tears, as I am now, in recalling that conversation and the many others we have had since. You are a source of inspiration to me and so many countless others.

Your courage and love, your heart and spirit are powerful. So powerful, in fact, that you carry us with you as you sail with grace and dignity beyond the clouds and stars out into the universe, unknown to us but home to you.

It is an honor for me to know you, my friend. I look forward to our journey together through time and space, always and forever.

    Your devoted friend,

    ‘Lezlie’
