Exclusive!- I Sat With George Martin When Beatles Won 4 Sgt. Pepper Grammys!
June 2, 2007
The first time I attended the Grammys was in 1968. My publishing administration partners Sandy and Kelli Ross, and I went with our star client, Quincy Jones. Although my partners were good friends of his, this was the first time I met him! Kelli’s father Irving Green, who owned Mercury records and was our silent partner, arranged for us to sit with him at the company table. When the Grammy people told Mr. Green that his table was overbooked, Although I was disappointed, I volunteered to be moved knowing we’d all be hanging out later anyway.
This was before the ceremonies was telecast and there was a sit down dinner before the awards were handed out. I was seated next to Beatle Producer George Martin, who I’d never met before. We knew a lot of the same people, however, and shared a truly passionate love of music, so we had a lot to talk about. That night his album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” won four Grammys, Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Album, Best Album Cover, and Best Engineered Record (non- Classical) and I had a night I’ll always remember!
