Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a racist, but we all know that the race card is going to be played in this election. So why don’t the campaign strategists from each party develop slogans for their own candidates, play it now, and get it out of the way. Then they can actually focus on the issues.

Let’s also allow each man to apologize for what they might say about each other in the future, so petty remarks aren’t blown out of proportion.

and let’s forget that Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, were used in an ad to mock Obama’s celebrity. Let’s forgive the left-leaning media, who kept playing a clip of the Dalai Lama, holding hands with a feeble looking McCain, about to slip and fall at any moment.

Let’s try not to laugh at all the racist jokes that we hear, just write them down and save them for later. We are all witnesses to history in the making. At one time, when the shit hit the fan, it’s the man with the tan who’s always the first to go. Today that man could be going to the White House!

Before I go any farther, I should mention that I’m half-African American and half-Jewish, which not only gives me the inalienable right to use “Oy” and “Yo” in the same sentence, but also allows me to be more candid about my multi-racial thoughts.

I hope Obama doesn’t appear in rapper Ludacris’ next video, after the scathing (but catchy) rhymes Ludacris made about McCain, and Clinton in his last one. Finally, I don’t think those pictures of McCain and his wife Cindy, “bumping fists”, will impress the younger generation, or ever be parodied on the cover of The New Yorker.

So let’s hope each candidate gives it a rest, at least until the conventions begin. And remember, don’t be afraid to call a spade a spade, unless it’s in front of someone who might beat your ass!

  1. Country Paul Says:

I don’t know where you’re going with this one, Artie. As a white Jewish (by birth, not practise) guy, I feel that McCain’s campaign is the one slinging mud first and hardest. It upsets me, because Obama has only mentioned race defensively against the onslaught, and also only when it was an obvious factor in something he was discussing. Obama does “lead” with being black; of course he is (actually, like you, bi-racial), but it’s only part of his make-up, as is being American, being a Christian, being a father, being well educated, etc.

The amount of misinformation out there in this campaign is staggering:
    – According to a recent poll (ABC? NBC? I forget which) 12% of Americans nationally still think Obama is a Muslim!
    – The “Weekly World News” or one of those supermarket trash-can liners has a cover story this week about his “love child.”
    – Faux News keeps on with the swipes at Michelle Obama – “baby mama” – and the “terrorist fist bump.”
    – There’s an e-mail that won’t die about how great Cindy McCain is (yes, she is indeed a woman of significant accomplishment) and what a wonderful family they would be in the White House, implying with veiled references that the Obamas would not be. (This despite the fact that McCain is divorced, the McCains maintain separate residences, and the Obamas are on their first marriage with their nuclear family intact.)

Meanwhile, it seems that the mainstream press, after their “love affair” with Obama (if there ever was one), has turned on him. CBS edited a McCain factual blunder out of an interview with Katie Couric without telling anyone; it has been up to the Obama campaign to bring it out, or it would have been swept under the table. And a variety of other gaffes and temper flare-ups have gone un- or under-reported. (Apparently McCain was overheard calling his wife a cxxt, and that was allowed to slide by; I can’t wait till he loses his temper with a female reporter and calls her that on camera.)

I know all of the above “without paying attention” – it is stuff that has found me while I’m on vacation and not even watching the evening news or reading the two papers a day I usually do. I also haven’t seen the McCain spots which attack Obama personally (according to reports), but I know they’re out there and have been labeled as untruthful by as conservative a paper as The Wall Street Journal.

So, no, Artie, I ceertainly hope Obama doesn’t “give it a rest” until the scurrilous attacks against him by the McCain campaign and other Republican surrogates stop(including Fox “News” – “terrorist fist bump”? come on!!!!). The last thing this country needs is a replay of 2000 and 2004, in which this kind of nastiness went on (and on) and the Democratic response was insufficient. I hope Obama’s campaign pounds McCain’s back double every time any of this shit surfaces. I want a campaign based on facts and positions – no gratuitous rap video appearances; no swift-boating; no “Dukakis in a tank.” As Joe Friday said, “Just the facts, ma’am.” And if “just the facts” aren’t forthcoming, “Give ’em hell, Barack!”
