“AMERICAN IDOL” can sidestep sex scandals, but can they skirt the fact they get a cut from every phone call and text they receive. With over 100 million votes expected in tonight’s finale, will they step up and give at least part of their take to charity?

On Monday the international news service Reuters reported,

“American Idol” reaches its climax this week, still ruling the roost on U.S. television after eight seasons, but the battle of the songsters faces declining audiences and limits to its viewer-driven format.

The finale showdown on Tuesday pits musical theater star Adam Lambert, whom Entertainment Weekly magazine called “the most exciting ‘American Idol’ contestant in years,” against college student Kris Allen, a favorite among teenage girls…”

What started as a cheesy summer show in 2002 has mushroomed into a cultural phenomenon and an estimated $1 billion-plus brand spanning everything from ice-cream and trading cards to an attraction at Walt Disney World Resort.

“As a reality show, it’s unique in that regard,” said Brad Adgate, a vice president at advertising buyer Horizon Media.

“Idol” has partnerships with phone company AT&T for fan voting, with iTunes for contestant song downloads, and record company RCA and its sister labels, where Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and other past winners have cut albums.

But clouds are gathering on the horizon.”

DAMN STRAIGHT CLOUDS ARE GATHERING ON THE HORIZON!

My friend, Kent Kotal, wrote in the Latest edition of Forgotten Hits,

“They are NOT toll free numbers … never have been … and I’ve been saying for YEARS now that American Idol and Fox Television are making a KILLING on these phone charges … the program generates BILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR in revenue!!! At $1.99 each for text messages, kids voting a dozen times for their favorites are spending close to $25 a week … every SINGLE week … to keep their favorites in the competition. It’s unreal the amount of money being generated by this phenomenon!!!”

The American public doesn’t care about the sexual orientation or marriage status of the two incredibly talented singers Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, but America won’t tolerate being taken advantage of!

It’s no wonder that Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul will be leaving the show when their contracts are up!

ad 12Did you notice how Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” has been scaring their viewers into voting more or their favorites might be going home? Is Ryan “Pumping The Monkey”, because the producers are getting a piece of the action!

Last week there were almost 64 million votes cast on “American Idol”, last night 88 million votes were tallied! Although the phone numbers are toll free Ryan clearly stated that, “Text messages rates apply” Now who gets the money?

I also wonder if the producers also get any “special consideration” for generating millions and millions of calls in the two hour period after the show from the phone company.

kris yesNow I don’t think there’s anything illegal about all of this…just amoral! I don’t think the British Producers are seeking revenge for losing the “colonies”, they’re just being insensitive to the American people and the kids who text.

Didn’t they make enough from over 40 commercials that ran during last nights show? They tout “Idol gives back”, their fine charitable organization which is saving lives in this country and around the world…why don’t they give back  their text income now and in the future to them? If they did, I might even be tempted to vote for Adam or Kris in the finale next week!

In the ’60s, Mickie Most was one of the most successful producers in the world selling millions of records with The Animals, Herman’s Hermits, Lulu, The Nashville Teens, Jeff Beck, Hot Chocolate, and Donovan.

In 1964, on my first trip to London, Chas Chandler (The Animals bass player) introduced me to him. I was really excited to see one of the world’s top producers up close and in action. My chance came when he invited me to the background vocal overdubbing session for The Animal’s “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. Although he was unequaled in the studio, I believe that his greatest talent was his ability to pick hit songs.

mickie with phoneOver the years, Mickie and I became friends, he made me acutely aware of the importance of the song and helped hone my skills both as writer and publisher. Mickie always made sure that I was contacted every time he came to New York looking for material, which was flattering, considering that he never recorded any of my songs. Seeing him meant listening to his new product, which never failed to elicit hours of raves from me.

I remember when he came by my office at Scepter records and played Ed Silvers and me “Sunshine Superman” and “Mellow Yellow” by Donovan before he delivered the masters to Epic…you can imagine how blown away I was!

The last time I saw him was in 1980, when I was producing a single on myself as an artist for Chrysalis Music UK and had gone horribly over budget. He listened to my tracks and gave me $10,000 in free studio time at his RAK studios to finish it up. I couldn’t thank him enough, but my “chemically fueled” out of control ego wouldn’t allow me to complete the project…that’s when I came back to the U.S. broke and brokenhearted…and left the music business.

I’m glad to say I’ve learned from my mistakes. If I have any other regrets, it’s that I didn’t keep up a lot of relationships I made through the years. You don’t meet someone like Mickie very often, but when you do you should cherish them.

MICKIE MOST R.I.P. ROCK IN PERPETUITY!

Last week “American Idol” reported almost 64 million votes were cast… the largest amount in the show’s history! Have you ever wondered how much the producers of “American Idol” get for each call and text?

Last week when ‘Lil Kim and her partner Derek Hough were sent home, it wasn’t because they weren’t the best, but because rodeo champ Ty  Murray’s huge fan base gave their TEN VOTES ALLOWED FOR EACH CALL to him. DAMN…TEN VOTES PER CALL? Then the calls are “supposedly” combined with the judges’ score to determine who stays or goes. Have you ever wondered how many calls really come in on any given night and how much they mean in the final tally?

In an age where “transparency” is the buzzword in every aspect of our society, “opaque” seems to be the byword of two of the most popular shows on television, “American Idol” and “Dancing with the Stars”. Nobody outside the of the show’s producers know what’s really going on….but as Paris Hilton once said, “We’re not talking about Rock Surgery here!”, so I’ll just sit back and enjoy the show…I mean shows!

In 1975, I was sitting in Wes Farrell’s (“Hang On Sloopy”) office up at Chelsea Records, when he played me a record he was about to release, “Sky High” by an English group called Jigsaw. I jumped out of my seat and screamed, “That’s a #1 record!”. Wes laughed, and in no time at all it hit the top of the charts!

A few months later at MIDEM, when the record was #1 in every country in the world, my partner Lou Reizner introduced me to Chas Peate, the publisher of the song and his two professional managers, Clive Scott and Des Dyer who wrote “Sky High” and were members of Jigsaw. Maybe it was the fact that they were primarily songwriters and publishers that we hit it off so well.

On their first trip to the US, Clive and Des put some incredible background parts on a master I was producing and didn’t charge me a penny! Their kindness to me throughout the years was extraordinary. Once my US production partner and I had a dispute and she froze my funds on the eve of my departure for Cannes, and another international music convention. Chas, Clive and Des let me use their booth to show and sell the seven dance albums I had, without asking me for a penny.

Over the years I lost contact with them, but reconnected over the internet. This morning Chas sent me an e-mail saying that Clive had passed away from a brain operation after an accident he had two weeks ago.

Clive Scott wasn’t just one of the good guys…he was one of the best!

Mama’s Behind You
by Artie Wayne

She may be far away…even a star away
but each and every day…I know she’s looking’ out for me

When I’m low on self-esteem
‘Cause a nightmare’s replaced the dream
When it all isn’t all it seems
I think of way back when…it was all so simple then.

When a storm was scarin’ me
Mama’d say so lovingly
Clouds of Grey may be all you see
But there’s still a sun above you and someone who’ll always love you!

Mama’s Behind You when trouble blinds you
And you can’t find your way
She will be there to comfort and spare you
Some of the hurtin’ that you may go through!

Mama’s Behind you let me remind you
Whatever you might do
Keep thinkin’ of her unconditional love
Mama’s Behind You…Mama’s Behind You!

Even in her photograph
She could always make me laugh
Even when I was torn in half
She knew just what to do…to put the pieces back together!

Mama’s Behind You when trouble blinds you
And you can’t find your way
She will be there to comfort and spare you
Some of the hurtin’ that you may go through!

Mama’s Behind you let me remind you
Whatever you might do
Keep thinkin’ of her unconditional love
Mama’s Behind You…Mama’s Behind You!

The first time I met producer Elliot Mazer (Janis Joplin, Neil Young) was in the office of Arnold Shaw, the General Professional manager of E.B. Marks music. Elliot was with another Philadelphia producer Billy Jackson (The Tymes) who was playing “Wonderful, Wonderful” (Raleigh/Edwards), for Shaw (the publisher) which was the follow up to the Tymes’ #1 hit, “So Much In Love”.

The next time I saw Elliot was on my first trip to Philadelphia, where I was trying to get some of my songs recorded by the artists who were dominating the charts, like Chubby Checker, Dee Dee Sharp, and Bobby Rydell. Producer/songwriter Jerry Ross (who I met in Harold Lipsius’ Jamie/Guyden record office trying to sell a master), took me up to Sigma Sound where I met all the top producers in Town.

Over the next few years, I’d run into Elliot at airports, getting brief, but always interesting reports about his recording activities. He’d start a story about a Janis Joplin session at LAX, and finish it up a few weeks later when I’d run into him at at JFK in N.Y. After a while I got used to hearing partial stories about producing Linda Rondstadt, or the Band’s “Last Waltz”.

When I was General Professional manager of Warner Brothers Music, we had a co-publishing deal with Neil Young and I had the privilege of hearing The “Harvest” album, produced by Mazer, months before its release. For weeks “Heart of Gold” was #1 with a bullet, in my office.

Now thirty years later, after reconnecting with Elliot on FACEBOOK I find he still has interesting stories, and I discovered they just reissued a remastered digitized version of “Harvest”…which I can’t wait to hear!
