When, Kris, David, Taylor, Jordin, and Reuben have all been forgotten, Chris Daughtry, will be remembered as the true “American Idol”! Even though he didn’t even make the final two in the competition three years ago, he went on to make the kind of records that people respect and really want to buy!

I knew that he had integrity by the songs he performed in the competition. It’s one thing, however, to know what song the audience would like to hear and another thing to be able to write it! Daughtry, could’ve joined the hard rock group, Fuel, but he decided to form his own unit and perform his own material.

“It’s Not Over”, topped the charts for months…so did “What About Now?”, and “Home” Now it looks like, “No Surprise”, will follow in their footsteps.

Even though this year’s second place winner on “American Idol”, Adam Lambert hasn’t put out a CD yet, his videotaped performances, including “Tracks Of My Tears”, “Whole Lotta’ Love”, and “A Change Is Gonna’ Come”, from the TV show have been selling remarkably well on ITunes and Amazon .com

I wasn’t very impressed when the “American Idol” competition began this year, and wondered if I would even watch the whole season. Then Adam Lambert came along and everything changed! Lambert is the real deal, and will surely make his mark in Rock and Roll History!

NOW IT”S UP TO YOU. WHO IS THE MOST POPULAR “AMERICAN IDOL” LOSER, CHRIS DAUGHTRY OR ADAM LAMBERT?

cd-cover1

CONGRATULATIONS Alan! What is amazing to me is you’re a better songwriter and performer today than you were 30 years ago! Your new CD is as relevant as the recent releases by Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Madonna, and Brian Wilson. It’s the finest album of your career.

When I worked with you at Warner Brothers Music, in the early ‘70s, we got hundreds, yes hundreds of covers on your highly commercial songs, which included cuts by 3 Dog Night, Steppenwolf, Bobby Sherman, Cher, Dawn, Helen Reddy, and Anne Murray. Although I knew you were immensely talented, I never expected you to develop into the artist you’ve become.

As contemporary as Nickelback, Coldplay, and John Mayer, I think your new CD, “I HEAR VOICES” is poised to capture the imagination of a new generation. I’m really proud that you start off the 14 song CD, with a song we co-wrote, “(Ain’t Gonna Hang Up) My Rock And Roll Shoes”:

“Back in the days of 45s, Had a hit record but I survived
you may not remember, it’s been a long time,
But I’m still a legend in my own mind!

So turn up the music and turn off the news
Gimme three minutes, I can loosen your screws
Rock your booty ’til you blow a fuse
Ain’t Gonna’ Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes”
Copyright Cityman Music/ WayneArt Music

The next 53 minutes are filled with instant classics.  “I Hear Voices” and “In Heavens Eyes” will probably be covered by some major artists, “Please Don’t Believe Me” feels like its ripped right out of today’s headlines.

I could write pages about what I heard, but “a song is worth a thousand words!” If my readers click onto http://cdbaby.com/cd/alanoday2/from/artiewayne, they can hear a complete verse and chorus of eight different songs from “I HEAR VOICES” for themselves!

Wishing you continued success, your friend, Artie https://artiewayne.wordpress.com

Ever since I was a kid I’ve known people who have tried to keep a low profile…so low in fact, they are virtually invisible! I’ve never been one of those people. With every ounce of strength and determination in my body, I fight everyday to make my mark in this world, while carving a pathway to the next.

I’d like to present a song I wrote with Terry Mace, about this struggle…and the effect love can have on it. I hope you enjoy it! Just click onto http://artiewayne.com/invisible.html

driplets0003This past season Kris Allen and Adam Lambert wore extreme handpainted shirts and jackets on “American Idol”, so did Jay Z, Kanye West, and Lady Gaga in their videos. A look, style, and technique I pioneered 25 years ago!

“In 1983, my friend and sometime business partner Allan Rinde decided to exit the music business and open a Chinese Restaurant in a Jewish neighborhood in Hollywood. I came up with a name for him, Genghis Cohen! The place was an immediate hit. Soon after, Allan asked me to take some of the burden off his shoulders and become night host. It was about this time that I had begun working with fabric paint and decided to create a unique look for myself. The first night I wore one of my painted shirts to work, I sold it off of my back for $125.00, and knew I had something special.

Soon I had all sorts of people buying my clothes including, Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert Downey, Jr, The Scorpions, Patti Dahlstrom, Sammy Davis, Jr., James Caan, Val Garay, Steve Cropper, and Luther VanDross.

erteWhen I did a couple of jackets for ERTE….the father of Art Deco….I didn’t know who he was. When I found out, I doubled my prices and landed a one man show at Bobbi Leonard’s gallery in Santa Monica. It wasn’t long before I was selling my clothing out of Fred Segals, Robinsons & Leather Force (who created Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and “Thriller” Jackets) on Melrose Avenue.

I was really excited when I was asked to create something special for Michael. He was at the height of his career and had the biggest album in history. His old label Motown had just put out an album of unreleased masters, “Farewell My Summer Love 1984”, which included “Touch The One You Love”, which I wrote with George S. Clinton, Jr. in 1973.

I hadn’t seen Mike for a few years, but like most of the world, I was a fan of his music and his fashion. I got an idea to do something in the military style he was starting to wear, and created “Driplets” which were globs of paint on the shoulders of a sweatshirt, to resemble “Epillets” on a military dress jacket. I also dripped paint down the side of a pair of old torn jeans to complete the outfit.

A few days after I delivered my new piece to Leather Force, I was told that Michael thought it looked great, but the paint was too thick, and would be impossible to dance in!

Unfortunately, I never was able to make that style work without a lot of paint. It didn’t make a difference, however, to actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Kelly Le Brock, Rolling Stone writer Ellen Sander, and J.D. Nicholas of the Commodores who had me create “Driplets” for them…but I guess they didn’t have to “Moonwalk” for a living.”

“In 1973, I was General Manager of Warner Brothers Music when I accompanied one of our Warner Brothers staff songwriters, George S. Clinton Jr. (who went on write the score for the three “Austin Powers” movies), to the Tokyo Music Festival. It was my first trip to Japan, which turned out to be one of the most significant times of my life.

I met South African/ songwriter and producer Terry Dempsey, who complained that no one would listen to his song because of his country’s stance on apartheid. When he assured me that he wasn’t a racist, I listened, loved it, and he gave me the US subpublishing rights without an advance. A year later,”Daydreamer” by David Cassidy had sold five million records all over the world!

It was also during this festival that I became friendly with Olivia Newton-John (“Let Me Be There”), who a year later recorded a song I gave her, “I Honestly Love You”, which became the song of the year in 1974!

George and I hung out with my friend, Paul Williams (“We’ve Only Just Begun”, “Old Fashioned Love Song”), his bass player Colin Cameron, and his guitarist, Art Munson, who became my longtime collaborator.

The most important connection I made, however, was with “Papa” Joe Jackson and his sons, The Jackson Five, which included a 12 year old Michael! Michael had just recorded “Little Christmas Tree” (Clinton/Wayne), and George and I were excited to meet him.

He was a magical little fella’, who was surrounded by aura that could touch the most cynical of hearts. I was taken aback, however, when he showed up on the front page of all the Japanese papers with Linda Purl, who was representing Japan in the Festival…the girl I had fallen in love with.

OK, he might have been 12 years old, but he was still Michael Jackson!

After placing 3rd in the competition, George and I returned to Hollywood. A few weeks later, while I was longing for Linda, Motown producers, Marcellino and Larson, asked George and me for another song for Michael.

TOUCH THE ONE YOU LOVE

By George S. Clinton, Jr. and Artie Wayne

If I had a penny for every time
I didn’t hold your hand
If I had a nickel for every time
I didn’t understand
I’d be the world poorest millionaire
‘Cause you’re not there
And no one ever told me
What you’re willing do
If I had only reach out
I might still be touching you

You got to TOUCH THE ONE YOU LOVE If you want the one you love to touch you.

You got to TOUCH THE ONE YOU LOVE If you want the one you love to touch you.

(You’ve got, you’ve got to touch
You got touch the one who loves you)

I would get embarrassed for every time
a movie made you cry
you’d get sentimental, and
I would never know the reason why
I hold the world’s greatest record

for my selfish pride
Is it really over?
Can I get close to you?
I only want to show you
that I’ve learned a thing or two

You got to TOUCH THE ONE YOU LOVE If you want the one you love to touch you.

You got to TOUCH THE ONE YOU LOVE If you want the one you love to touch you.

(You’ve got, you’ve got to touch
you got touch the one who loves you)

(Fade out)

Although Michael made a great record, it remained in the can for over 10 years. Then in 1984 I was hosting Allan Rinde’s Genghis Cohen, a hot Hollywood Chinese restaurant, when manager Benny Medina (Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez), came in for dinner. At the time he was an A&R man for Motown Records and was putting together a package of unreleased Michael Jackson masters to capitalize on the success of “Thriller”. You can imagine how I felt when he said that, “Touch The One You Love” was finally coming out in the “Farewell My Summer Love” album!”
