ARTIE KORNFELD AND THE STORY BEHIND “THE PIED PIPER”

Although Artie Kornfeld “The Father Of Woodstock” and I have been friends since the ’60s, until recently I never asked him about the story behind some of his biggest hits as a songwriter. In 1966, he had “The Pied Piper” which made it to  number four on Billboard’s Charts, which was one the most optimistic protest songs of the era…now here’s the story behind it.

“The song, “The Pied Piper” was the result of my being an avid reader since pre-natal period.”, says songwriter / producer Artie Kornfeld (“Dead Man’s Curve, “The Rain The Park, and Other Things”).

“I remember Paul Simon telling me how he wrote the “59th St. Bridge Song (“Feelin’ Groovy)” while driving into the city. I was heading into Manhattan to write with my dear friend and co-writer Steve Duboff. I was the Director of A and R at Mercury and had a 3 hour demo session booked for a young folk rocker named Jonathan.  We were scheduled to cut 3 songs.

I made my way to the city in my “Dead Mans Curve” Corvette that Donny Kirshner gave me an advance to buy, when DMC  went top 5.  I kept a tape recorder in the car.  As I drove towards the 59th Street Bridge I thought of the Fable about a mythical Pied piper who through music, rid his Nation of the Bad Rats that had the children living in fear. There were no freedoms and no expression allowed.  The lyric and skeleton song came 1, 2, 3, so fast.

By the time I reached the office-studio Duboff had a dynamo melody on the way.  We sat, as my production session was an hour away. I turned the lyric almost anarchistic saying follow me as I promise to rid the earth of The Rats that had us going into Viet Nam.  I had the sort of vision I knew the way out.

The Pied Piper by playing his flute had the bad guys (the RATS) follow him into the Sea and freed the land. Music and the right to free expression were returned!

The only reason the song was recorded, as you Artie Wayne know, we were masters at recording.   I finished the three demos for Jonathan in two and a half hours and took out chord sheet and 3 hour old lyric, handed it to Hugh McCracken.  Then I had Artie Kaplan get his flute out and in 1 hour had cut the demo to complete record status.

At the time, I did not realize this was premonition of the role I would play seven years later creating Woodstock and really freeing the children.

Charles Koppelman and Don Rubin, professional managers at Screen-Gems Columbia music, had without my knowledge been approached by Phillips Records, and had put out the Pied Piper we cut, and called us The Changing Times.  I knew nothing about it until it hit the charts and Steve and I were booked for the 1st Sonny and Cher Tour.

I disliked the Crispian St. Peter version since it knocked us off the charts.  Recently I heard a Del Shannon version on YouTube, the song had become the motto for my political and musical agenda free the kids and bring back to this cold world the right to express yourself.

The Pipers Wail is still working it’s magic in all my projects including my book, “The Pied Piper of Woodstock”.  It tells about the life of us who are chosen to bring the music to the World. The Book could have been called “THE PIED PIPER”, without Woodstock in the title since the message has always been in the song. Free the children to create music.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge my late Dear Friend and writing Partner, Steven Duboff. The two of us, based on a bond of love and pure fun, writing together and even touring for 20 cities doing the original version as The Changing Times.  We stayed great pals until his death in the late 90s..We had an incredible over 60 songs released as a team.

TEN LAST MINUTE COOL GIFT SUGGESTIONS!

After reconnecting with a lot people from my past and making new friends on Facebook, I discovered that many were more productive than ever in music, while some had expanded their horizons into other fields. Here are some things I’ve seen and heard that’s impressed me.

My old friend, Ann Munday, who used to run Chrysalis Music in the US, has posted some of her excellent Artwork. She says,“You know that time at school, when you’re supposed to work out what you want to do. My passion was painting. Home life was a nightmare and the art classroom was where I spent as much time as possible. Except for the first 2 months working for a bank, all jobs I took, related to art in some way. And I ended up in the art dept of Charles Hansen music books. From there the music biz fed my creative need, working with songwriters and artists.” The watercolor, “Tea with Klee”, I painted as a gift for my sister in law and brother living in the UK, as a thank you for my visit.”

THE SHIRELLES CHRISTMAS SONG “MAMA, MY SOLDIER BOY’S COMING HOME”

“Back in 1966 I was working as a staff writer and producer for Scepter Records. Florence Greenberg who owned the company decided to re-release “SOLDIER BOY” by the Shirelles which had been number one a few years earlier, and asked me to write and produce a new b-side for it.

She also suggested that to save time and money I should write the new song over the old Shirelles track, “A THING OF THE PAST, which she owned and was in the girls key. It was during the Vietnam War and I decided to write a song about a soldier returning from the front at Christmas. It’s called “MAMA, MY SOLDIER BOY IS COMIN” HOME”

As far as I was concerned there were no b-sides and even though I only had three hours to write and record the song with Shirelles I was determined not to make it a throwaway. I flirted with Shirley while she was on mike until she gave me the playful performance I was looking for.

We recorded just one verse at a time and while she was singing one, I was writing the next. At the end of the session, everything was finished and was released the next day!”

MTV is the pioneer in pop videos where you can see videos on line from early in the morning…until a little later in the morning. They are a bit heavy on puke-inducing alleged reality shows like “The Hills”, and the search for a new best friend by Paris Hilton, but you still can keep up with the latest hits as well as the drama http://www.mtv.com/

VHI.COM

VH1 is the equivalent of an MOR or Adult Contemporary station with very little rap, and a better quality of pop songs. They have some the coarsest shows on reality TV like “”FLAVOR OF LOVE” and “Tool Academy””. They probably have shows like “What’s Your STD?”, and “Who’s Your Baby’s Daddy” waiting in the wings. They also routinely have music specials that are pretty good, but my favorite show is the Top 20 video countdown. Check it out. http://www.vh1.com/

BET…The Black Entertainment network is a bit rap heavy, but diverse within the Genre. It’s also one of the few places where you can see the latest R&B videos. One of my favorite shows is “106^th street And Park”, with its Top Ten Countdown hosted by the foxy, Rocsi and some guy. The site also archives favorite old videos of current chartmakers like Usher, Ciara, and TI, which has given me a new perspective on enigmatic artists like Tupac Shakur. Beyoncé earns 10 nods, Taylor Swift lands eight, and Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell and Kanye West receive six each

Nominations for the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards were announced tonight by The Recording Academy and reflected an eclectic mix of the best and brightest over the past year in music, as determined by the voting members of The Academy.

Beyoncé topped the nominations with 10, Taylor Swift garnered eight, and the Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell, and Kanye West each earned six nods. David Guetta, Jay-Z and Lady Gaga received five each; and Colbie Caillat, Michael Giacchino, Kings of Leon, John Newton, RedOne, Bruce Springsteen, T-Pain, and Keith Urban each received four nominations.

IT’S AN AUTOTUNE WORLD!

There’s a new vocal effect that’s making it onto the soundtrack of our lives and it’s called Auto-Tune. You can hear it on roughly one third of all pop records out today. But trying to explain it is like “trying to tell a stranger ‘bout Rock and Roll.”

Here are four examples of how Auto-Tune is used. From Cher and “Believe” 10 years ago to Britney Spears who’s currently topping the charts with “3”. I’ve also included a couple of side trips to the hood with Snoop Dogg, where Auto-Tune has digitally given a melody to the spoken word, and to Jay Sean’s club smash “Down, Down, Down” where a new level of sophistication is reached with what some are already calling “a new Instrument”.
