EXCLUSIVE! BACKSTAGE AT THE “AMERICAN IDOL” FINALE!
May 27, 2010
This morning my good friend producer/manager Joel Diamond, who is under consideration to replace Simon Cowell, gave me a first hand account of what happened last night at the “AMERICAN IDOL” finale. Joel says,
“Last night my 17 year old daughter Briana and I had great seats at the Nokia Theater in Hollywood, for the season finale of “AMERICAN IDOL” and it sure did not disappoint! In the closest race of the 9 seasons of the show, with only 2% of the vote separating Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze, Lee deservedly walked away with the crown.
How moving was the tribute to Simon Cowell, who seemed to genuinely enjoy all the roasting, kudos, and accolades from everybody, including former judge Paula Abdul who looked absolutely gorgeous when the curtain rose on her. There were spectacular guest performances by Alice Cooper, Christina Aguilera, Bee Gees, Chicago, Janet Jackson, Joe Cocker, Christina Aguilera, Michael McDonald, and Alanis Morrisette, which included duets with members of the final top ten and certainly what seemed to be almost straight from his hospital bed, the surprise appearance of Brett Michaels, which brought everybody to their feet.
Another highlight of the evening for me was the former winners, runners up, and exceptional past contestants all coming out dressed in white, which dazzled the crowd with their moving Simon Cowell tribute.
Artie, I’ve been to Academy Awards, Emmy’s, Grammy’s, etc., but I’ve never seen the excitement that I saw last night at the Nokia Theater. It was total pandemonium both inside and outside the theater.
I would give anything to have a shot at producing just one track with either Crystal or Lee! Having said that, I’m now in the process of recording a new CD with the JOEL DIAMOND EXPERIENCE, which will feature duets by both veteran artists as well as new and underexposed artists. The first single from the album, UNITED WE STAND (2010) featuring BENNY MARDONES (who wrote and was the artist on “Into The Night” which will also be Usher’s next single) and Teresa James, was just rush released yesterday.
It was also quite interesting bump into and chat with after the show many of the music industry notables, both artists and behind the scenes executives, who already knew about my being considered as the next American Idol Judge. One of them even said to me, ‘I bet you were already backstage in Simon’s dressing room trying on one of his black T shirts to see if it fits’.”

POSSIBLE SIMON COWELL REPLACEMENT JOEL DIAMOND SHINES, AS HE UNVEILS HIS MASTERPIECE, “UNITED WE STAND!”
May 25, 2010
While I was doing an interview with producer/ manager Joel Diamond, who’s under consideration to replace Simon Cowell on “American Idol, he played me a track he was working on. Although I’ve been known to leap on desks and dance around offices when I got excited about something, I’ve never experienced what happened to me next.
By the time the first chorus played of Joel’s brilliant remake of “UNITED WE STAND 2010” featuring Benny Mardones and Teresa James, tears were running down my cheek and I was a bit embarrassed. I never experienced such an emotional reaction before, publicly or privately and knew once again, I was witness to an extraordinary piece of musical history.
Only twice in my career have I heard a track one time and predicted it would become record of the year, the first was a test pressing of “Jesus Christ Superstar” that my friend MCA publisher (at the time) Don Williams played for me, which he, Allan Rinde and I helped get to the top of the charts.
The second record was among the songs I gave Olivia Newton –John to record, “I Honestly Love You”, which MCA didn’t even want to put out.
When I asked Joel what his plans for “UNITED WE STAND 2010” were, he said he wanted to finish it up and debut it in a year and a half at the 10th anniversary of 9/11 tragedy. I tried to control myself but I slipped and said, “Are you out of your f#@kin’ mind! The record is perfect and should be out right now! We all need to be inspired RIGHT NOW!!
I’m proud to say that he’s taken my suggestion and has rush released “UNITED WE STAND 2010”by the Joel Diamond Experience, featuring Benny Mardones and Teresa James.
Joel has just made a video, directed by Wedigo Watson, that has just been put up on YouTube.

When I heard my pal and label mate from the past, Tommy James, who has one of the hottest books around, “Me, the Mob, and the Music”, was going to speak at Rutgers University, I was impressed.
Since I did one of the first interviews with Tommy, in which he told stories about Morris Levy and Roulette records that weren’t his book, people including myself aren’t afraid to speak out on the “Mob” any longer. Even John Gotti, Jr. did in an in depth interview on 60 minutes…without fear of retaliation.
My friend, DJ Paul Payton and I have been creating a series of 10 five minute radio shows with Tommy called, THE TOMMY JAMES COLLEGE OF ROCK AND ROLL KNOWLEDGE! Tommy not only talks about the book, but how his music was created. How they got “that sound on the last chorus of “Crimson and Clover” What was “Crystal Blue Persuasion” really about? How he was “managed” or I should say “mis-managed” in a world where assholes never take a day off!
Here is a sample of what you’ll find in THE TOMMY JAMES COLLEGE OF ROCK AND ROLL KNOWLEDGE! https://artiewayne.wordpress.com/2010/02/09/tommy-james-shocking-new-book-methe-mob-and-the-music/

Last week comedian/ actor/ singer Jaime Foxx may as well have disqualified himself as a possible replacement for Simon Cowell on “American Idol”. As a mentor to the contestants on Tuesday and as a comment maker on the Wednesday results show, he was too strident, overbearing, and “in your face” to be welcomed into my home every week.
In the meantime, the debate goes on as to who is qualified to fill that English booger’s shoes. It’s my guess “Idol” will wait until after the season finale to make the big announcement. Will it be David Foster, Elton John, or Don “Mr. Personality” Kirshner? or will it be a relative unknown to the public, someone who has the credentials but not the TV Q that broadcasters rely on?
Wasn’t Simon Cowell a complete unknown in the US, while Paula Abdul had several hit records, and Randy Jackson was a top producer, as well as bass player for Journey. It only took a few weeks for the show and Simon to catch on. Why can’t it happen again?
A month ago I asked my readers “Who do you think will replace Simon Cowell, Ron Fair (CEO of Geffen Records) or Indie Producer/ manager Joel Diamond? Some of the hundreds of comments, at the bottom of the article, made by some of the biggest names in the industry make it absolutely clear who the next judge should be! https://artiewayne.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/joel-diamond-the-new-american-idol-judge/

LENA HORNE R.I.P. ROCK IN PERPETUITY!
May 10, 2010
“In 1966, my partners Sandy and Kelli Ross, my wife Sheilah, and I were guests of one of our clients, Quincy Jones at an NAACP dinner for Lena Horne. The singer/ actress was being honored for the break through she made in music and film. She was the first “colored” actress who became a sex symbol around the world, featured in “Cabin In The Sky”, “Panama Hattie”, “Til The Clouds Roll By”, and “Stormy Weather.”
Her musical segments in mainstream (white) films were shot so they could be easily removed when they were shown in the “segregated south”. They also could use these clips to play among selected “shorts” to accompany feature films in the more “liberal north”.
Although I was honored to meet Lena Horne, I wasn’t as excited I as let’s say meeting Diana Ross, or a Dusty Springfield, since I considered her more of my mother’s generation than mine. As the lights dimmed a short film ran that had me mesmerized, not only was she beautiful and talented, she was a tireless champion of Civil Rights.
According to Wikipedia, “During World War II, when entertaining the troops for the USO, she refused to perform “for segregated audiences or for groups in which German POWs were seated in front of African American servicemen”, [7] according to her Kennedy Center biography. Since the US Army refused to allow integrated audiences, she wound up putting on a show for a mixed audience of black US soldiers and white German POWs. She was at an NAACP rally with Medgar Evers in Jackson, Mississippi the weekend before Evers was assassinated. She also met President John F. Kennedy at the White House two days before he was assassinated. She was at the March on Washington with Martin Luther King.”
After the film, Ms. Horne walked to the podium through thunderous applause and a standing ovation! Talk about humility, she said a few thank yous and sat back down. You could almost hear a unanimous whisper saying how good she looked at 50 years old!
I smiled and thought how fortunate I was to be here at this special occasion and witness something I’d remember for the rest of my life!
Lena Horne, R.I.P. ROCK IN PERPETUITY

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! “FROM THE INSIDE”
May 9, 2010
“Whenever a line or idea came to me, seemingly from out of the blue I considered it a gift. It was only during times of great emotional stress, however, when I channeled entire songs. The next time this happened was when my Grandmother passed away in 1974.
When I heard the news, I flew back to New York from Hollywood, where I was general manager of Warner Brothers Music. Although for the past few years I had been concentrating on promoting other people’s songs … now I was compelled to write again.
During the three-day period, from the time she passed until her funeral …Gooma came to me in my darkened hotel room several times. She talked to me in her usual comforting tone… told me not to cry or be afraid. She smiled and said I should be happy for her…that she was finally out of pain.
She didn’t look like the 83 year old that I revered…but like the thirty year old, whose picture lived in the family album. She sat across from me slightly illuminated by what seemed to be a light coming from within. She told me that we all have guides from the other side who anonymously give us information daily…but from now on she would be my personal guide.”

After seeing Miley Cyrus’ new video “CAN”T BE TAMED!” All I can say it’s much to do about nothing. The special effects are good, Miley looks cute, but the song is rather pedestrian. The video brings to mind the old adage, “You can polish shit, but you can’t make it shine!” (unfortunately, the video was taken down on all the usual sites due to terms of copyright violation.”)
Pictured above the precocious Miley with her new boyfriend Liam “Hemlock”, but will he be poison to her career? That smile on her face makes you wonder, is there blood on her purity ring?

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN RETURNS!
May 5, 2010
Last night, my pal from the past, and one of my favorite dancing partners, Olivia Newton-John was on an inspired episode of “Glee” playing herself and performing a duet with Jane Lynch on “Let’s Get Physical”, which was Olivia’s biggest hit back in the ‘70s! HERE’S THE ENTIRE EPISODE http://www.hulu.com/watch/144901/glee-bad-reputation
In 1974, on the day of my taking over as head of Irving-Almo music, A&M records publishing arm, Olivia Newton-John called me from London looking for material. I knew very little about the catalog, so I held a song casting meeting to take suggestions from everyone on the publishing staff. After listening to quite a few songs, one caught my attention, “I Honestly Love You” by Jeff Barry and the Late Peter Allen. I was late for an appointment so I had only a chance to hear one verse and barely scan the lyric. We shipped it to London as quickly as we could along with an idea I had, Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows”.
About a month later, Olivia calls me from Beverly Hills, to say she’s in town and she wants to come over and play me her recording of the two songs I sent, “God Only Knows” and “I Honestly Love You”. I put her on hold and ran through the office yelling, ” What’s “I Honestly Love You”? Things at the publishing company had been moving so quickly, that I didn’t remember the song! When Olivia came over to my office with her producer John Farrar and played a dub for me…I was almost in tears. The first thing I said to them was, “This should the Record of the Year!” You can imagine my surprise when MCA records didn’t even want to put it out as a single because, “It was too slow!” That’s when Jerry Moss (the M in A&M) let me use his top record promotion staff to break it out of the album. BTW, I Honestly Love You” written by Jeff Barry and Peter Allen, did become the Record of the Year in 1974!
