WHOPPY AND STREAKER, TOGETHER FOREVER!

August 3, 2011

When a human passes away it takes three days for the spirit to leave the earth and make a transition to the other side. When a pet passes away the process takes the same amount of time.

The pet is more confused at first, but becomes more accepting of what’s going on when they are reunited with their animal friends on the other side, who are there to help with the crossover. The pet is happy to go back “home”, unless they’ve formed an exceptionally strong bond with their earthly caretaker, which makes them want to stay on earth a little longer to make sure their “human” is going to be all right without them.

We can be assured, that these little spirits will be watching out for us for the rest of our lives. I can attest that many long gone animal friends have come back to me in dreams, meditations, and semi-darkened rooms, during times of stress or loneliness and helped me get through the agony of it all.

As I’m sitting on the patio by the hummingbird feeder my little pal, Larry, flies by and I can almost feel his wings sympathetically touch my knee as I weep for my little pal Streaker, who had to be put down a few days ago or face a long painful illness.

When my friend, Allan Rinde moved toNashville to get married, he asked me to take care of his little calico cat, Streaker and her boyfriend, a 23 lb. white tom called Whoppy, because his future wife was allergic.

For the past 14 years Allan has paid for their food, toys, and thousands of dollars in medical expenses. When Whoppy passed two and a half years ago, “Streak” and I became closer sharing my pillow, as well as a place at the dinner table. About a year ago, after Allan got a divorce he offered to rent me a couple of rooms in his house in Palm Springs, where we’ve lived ever since.

Although he hadn’t spent much with her over the last decade, Streaker loved Allan and when we all lived together “Streak” would sit in front of his computer, all night long acting as his assistant. While Allan spoiled her with gourmet cat food, exotic toys, and even a recirculating water fountain, I kept her paws on the ground by yelling, “ARE YOU CRAZY?”, and sentences ending in “ucker”, whenever she got out of line.

I close my eyes, visualize her and tell her that it’s time for her to go and I’m going to be alright. Whoppy, who’s come back to escort her “home”, looks contented, but Streaker give me one last look goodbye…then sadly walks away.

I want to call out, “Don’t go!”, but the three day window of transition is closing fast and if they don’t leave now they could become trapped between here and the other side for eternity!

As I sit weeping, my little friends disappear into the morning…and a few minutes later Larry the hummingbird reappears to introduce me to his new girlfriend. He senses that this isn’t a good time, and they both bolt off into a sky full of fluffy white clouds.

As I watch them leave, I gaze up, and for a few minutes watch the clouds change forms, as clouds are known to do. I smile as I see likenesses of all the animal friends I’ve had in my life, Waldo, my parakeet in grade school, my aunt Wan’s dogs Fluffy and Queenie, who protected me from bullies, Chipper, the little spitz, who turned nasty and had his name changed to Al for Al Capone, then when he became nice again, changed it back to Chipper!

There was Walter, who led my grandmother to safety through a fire, Duke, Harold, Pete, Tippy, and of course, my little Cairn Terrier Nookie, my companion for 12 years.

Even though I know Streaker’s in good company…it doesn’t  mean I’m going to miss her any less….but seeing Whoppy and Streaker playing together again in the clouds, and in my medical marajuana tinted memories is inspiring and proof positive that true love lives forever.

Goodbye my monkey friends…until we meet again.

Love Artie

  1. Artie,
I am so sorry to hear about Streaker. We lost 3 beloved family pets, 2 dogs, Chuck and Bella, and one cat, Lucy, in a small window of 3 weeks. I know how difficult it is, but you will be together again, no doubt of that.
The only cure for lost love of any kind is to love again. I know you will.

    Artie & Allen:
I am so sorry to hear of your loss and know from experience how low and depressed you can get when loosing a pet who is also your best friend. May all this pass soon and may God give you a new love and friend when you ask him for the opportunity to take care of one of his friends….Warmest and best, BarryO

  3. Alan Says:

    Artie,
What a beautiful tribute you wrote. Your affinity for animals has been another link in our long friendship. We know that their love for us is often more pure, authentic, & uncomplicated than humans can offer. I’m glad that you had the great spiritual benefit of your animal soulmates over the years, & I wish you healing from this latest loss. Please know that I understand.

  4. Bobbi Cowan Says:

Artie: While reading this post, I was in tears, wrote you a heartfelt response, incorporating the losses I have experienced with both my puppies, Georgie Girl and Claire, which I have never completely gotten over…but you don’t get over these losses–you just go on, and know that they are waiting for you…just like “What Dreams May Come.” Thelma and Louise are as dear to me as Whoppy and Streaker are to you, and the thought of losing them–just the thought–brings real pain. I wrote more, but then hit the wrong button and it disappeared. Know that my thoughts are with you, and I will be looking for a kitten for you in the coming weeks.
    Love,
    Bobbi

  6. Dear Artie & Allan,

Your tribute to your fur baby was so touching. I have two of my own and know why you loved your guys so. Cats are so wonderful…..they can sense what you are feeling. I am glad you had Streake for as long.

Streaker would want that you get another kitty to love you.

Beautiful tribute, Artie. So sorry for your loss; I know how painful it is…having lost quite a few beloved pets in my lifetime. My thoughts are with you at this time.

It was sad to hear of the loss your dear friend Streaker. I’m sure the memory of all the fun times will never go away. I know as we lost 2 of our children (Lab & part Lab/Bluetich Hound/Dane) in 2008 & 2010. They’re never far from our hearts & thoughts, so I do know how you feel.Hopefully she is feeling no pain and resting in a comfortable surrounding. Stay strong & you’ll be OK..
P.S. It’s more than OK to shed tears until there are no more.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

    EPILOUGE – Whoppy and Streaker

Later that evening, as I was checking my email one last time before I went to bed, I felt a presence behind me. I turned around, and saw Whoppy, who slipped back over to this side, floating in the air with his back towards me, probably thinking I couldn’t see him.

Instinctively I yelled,” ARE YOU CRAZY” and proceeded to “Old Yeller” him, until he went back to the other side. Although he’d come back to see me often over the past few years, I knew that this wasn’t the time for him to linger.

Three weeks later, as I was meditating I was startled by a presence beside me…it was a split second vision of Streaker. She was plump, healthy, and looked about three years old, not the underweight 15 year cat who had been my companion for the last 14 years. She’d come back to tell me that she was alright…then she was gone.

I smiled and fell asleep… knowing we all were going to be okay.

  24. Artie,
The unconditonal love a pet gives his family is indescribeable. The attachment we have to them cannot be described in words but it is not like any other loss we may experience. You have to be an animal lover to understand what you are going through. To see and look into the eyes of our pets and know the love they have for you is just the best. We can speak to them and they understand us, but they can only show us their love through their eyes and gentle licks or cuddling. We can’t hear them complain or describe pain, but can only feel it with our hearts. That is the person who understands what losing a pet feels like.
Hope you are doing well. I read in between the lines with your posts. God Bless You…..Bernadette

  25. Artie , the fondness and pureness of heart, ring across the ages. Friends forever. Love and light Heidi Little

  26. Artie, this was beautifully put. I had to put my beloved 16 year old cat, Logan, to sleep over the weekend. Like you, I couldn’t help but think of all the loving pets I’ve had in my 65 years. It never gets easier to have to do this, after all this time. Even when you tell yourself that you are doing it to ease their suffering, it is still hard to make that final decision. You want to hold them forever and still think you can do something to make them better.
I’m glad we got to spend a day with him at home before taking him back to the vet for the final time. They had given him pain medication and his appetite actually came back strong for a bit and he purred now and then, but the X-rays and tests had confirmed there was no going back, his quality of life was gone..it would be worse from now on. Knowing all this, it was much easier to say “enough”, no more prodding, no more needles, no more stress of having to go to the vet, etc.
It’s great you got to share a special bond with Streaker over time and grew to love to love her as your own. Our lives become so much richer for having had such fantastic creatures in our lives.
