IS HANK WILLIAMS, JR.’S FOOT STUCK IN HIS MOUTH OR IS THAT A FOOTBALL?

October 8, 2011

THIS MORNING I GOT AN EMAIL FROM MY FRIEND OF 40 YEARS TONY DiGIROLAMO. A TV DIRECTOR, WHO TOOK EXCEPTION GENERALLY TO MY USE OF PROFANITY IN RECENT ARTICLES AND IN PARTICULAR TO WRITING ABOUT THE HANK WILLIAMS, JR. CONTROVERSY, UNDER THE HEADING “ASSHOLES NEVER TAKE A DAY OFF”.

HE EXPLAINED THAT MY USING SUCH LANGUAGE ENCOURAGES MORE OF IT AS THE COMMENTS FLOW, WHICH IS CERTAINLY UNDERSTANDABLE. I DON’T WAN’T TO OFFEND ANY OF MY FELLOW CHRISTIANS, BUT DON’T WANT TO DISAPPOINT ANY OF MY FELLOW AMERICANS, WHO DESERVE A FEW ANSWERS ABOUT WHAT THIS CONTROVERSY IS ALL ABOUT.

AS AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN, MY FIRST RESPONSE THAT MR. WILLIAMS’ ILL CONCEIVED REMARKS WERE RACIST COMPARING PRESIDENT OBAMA TO HITLER, BUT THEN I THOUGHT HE WAS JUST STUPID! NOW I HAVE DEEPER CONCERNS…CAN I EVER FORGIVE HIM?

PERSONALLY, I BELIEVE THAT EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD STAND BEHIND THE PRESIDENT IN TIME OF WAR, OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES.

NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK? (ANY COMMENT USING FOUL LANGUAGE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DELETED) JUST BELOW THE ARTICLE IS THE PLACE TO LEAVE YOUR RESPONSES

  1. Tom Slocum Says:

Ol Hank Jr., is a stupid, racist, bigot, like the Old South, he promotes, in hopes “TNHEY” will rise again…..i do not care, how many “Disenfranchised Citizens” he employs….

  2. You got it right – racist or stupid? How about he’s a stupid racist. And can one of these idiots come up with a reference other than Hitler? Don’t need to hear that name every other day.

  3. mark barkan Says:

When I was asked in a radio interview why I voted for our President I said “He can not only save this country, but perhaps even the world!” People like Hank Williams Jr. are not just stupid-they are harmful and dangerous in a very dangerous time. People have to see what the aims of our wonderful and insightful President are. Not just what is happening in the present-but what could happen in the future. It’s even more unfortunate that a fellow creator makes these dangerous remarks.

    • Joe Nelson Says:

So – DID he change the world? More specifically, did he change it for the better? We were three times as far in the toilet after two years of President Obama as we’d been after eight years of President Bush. And please, don’t bother saying that you don’t get after the kind of mess Bush left behind overnight. Sooner or later you have to take ownership of what’s yours, and the first step to recovering is to change course. If Obama can’t reverse eight years of negativity in eight years of his own, how is he going to reverse twelve years’ worth of damage in four?

The problem with Hank Jr. has less to do with overt racism than it has to do with his naive belief in the “ideology over results” demand of the Tea Party that the newly elected Republican majority in Congress should obstruct anything that happens in Congress, instead letting the country twist in the wind for two years until the GOP can complete their retake of the government (and if that doesn’t happen, guys, then what?). After the election John Boehner asserted, correctly, that the country couldn’t afford to risk the implications of that kind of obstructionism and that it would be necessary for all sides to woirk together to clean up the mess that exists now. The fact that Obama and Boehner are doing as much together as they are is done in that spirit, and when time is this critical, you can’t take the chance of separate workgrouping if it’s possible to co-operate, so Hank Jr. and his ilk need to grow up.

Speaking of racism, I can’t help but notice that the left is in full attack mode against Herman Cain, guilty of the crime of being a black man who took the wrong side (implying that as soon as you shift to the right you somehow betray your skin). It will be interesting to watch the Presidential contest if Cain does get the nomination. Had Hillary Clinton been the President (because I think she would have followed the Obama course for the most part), it’d have been even more intersting. Slam everyone who doesn’t commit 110% to Cain as racist. Uh-oh – I’m drooling…

      • Paul Payton Says:

Joe Nelson: I disagree that Boehner has been in any way helpful except, perhaps for “too little, too late.” The majority – if not all – of Republicans in congress would rather make Obama fail than allow him any opportunity to succeed. Mitch McConnell has said exactly that: it is his first priority. (Funny, I thought he was elected to serve his country, not to make its President fail. In my view, putting politics before country for a person in his position is possibly seditious.)That President Obama has done what he has already is a great testament to the man, who I proudly voted for and will again if given the opportunity.

I don’t dislike Herman Cain as a person, nor do I or would I disdain him (or anyone) because he’s black; I dislike his positions because they are dramatically wrong. Most importantly, his 9-9-9 plan would tax lower-wage workers disproportionately more despite what he claims. I think he is a good and well-meaning man, just on the wrong side of the issues; I also think he is one of the least among the misled and/or “voluntarily blind” cadre of Republicans running. To be considering people like Bachmann or Perry is a tragic commentary on the sunken state of american politics.

Next to all this, Hank Jr. is a a frustrated stupid reactionary whose talent might tuck unto his Daddy’s little finger on a good day. In fact, I’ve often wondered what Hank Sr. would think about how his son turned into such a jerk. The idea that he is consulted as some kind of “expert” on politics beggars the imagination.

How the hell did we get into this mess anyway? And who can – or will be allowed – to fix our tragically broken social contract?

Thanks for opening this dialog, Artie. Hope you’re doing well!

  4. dave heasman Says:

Back in the 60s the only argument against hippies that I thought deserved any attention at all was the one that society was so very fragile that a challenge such as theirs might cause massive dislocation leading to even harder times for poor people. (Any societal dislocation leads to harder times for poor people).

But here you have these Republicans, these billionaires, these corporations, brainwashing idiot country singers and running a campaign of massive civil disobedience against the people of the US. It will not end well for anyone. Poor people will suffer the most, as always, but nowadays society really is fragile. The US has had it. Sorry and all, the country that invented jazz and rock n roll is being destroyed by people who hate jazz and rock n roll.

  5. Dee Trane Says:

Hank Williams, Jr., is one of the “good ole boys”, drink on Saturday Night,
Church on Sunday morning. Stupid racist works for me as well –

President Obama has more intelligence than HW,Jr. will ever be able
to comprehend – When I hear the Star Spangled Banner played, I
    won’t be thinking of Hank.

    Dee Trane

  6. Horatio Ready Says:

I am not defending Hank Jr nor his words, however anytime someone disagrees with Obama he/she is called a racist. I will be glad when he is out of office. I don’t agree with his policies and I hate that between him and George W. Bush our country is about bankrupt.

  7. david plenn Says:

No, I don’t think we owe it to our country to stand behind our President in times of war. I can’t believe you actually believe that, Artie. That means no VIetnam protests and that means we vilify all those who opposed the Iraq war, which has proven to be based on lies.

Hank Jr. is a cretin who has every right to say what he said. I don’t even think he’s necessarily a racist – he’s just stupid.

  8. Thanks Artie, When a man finds it in his heart to forgive someone who has done him wrong that’s when a man is closest to God. People can do things out of ignorance in matters of humanity I wouldn’t call them stupid.
How many times was Bush called Hitler and a Nazi?
Here’s one that even Wolf Blitzer of CNN had to take issue with, George Soros a Nazi era survivor. He called Bush a Nazi in his book: Soros Compares Bush to Nazis/ At YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DuafAqAHrc And he even agreed with Blitzer that it probably was over the top.
I wish we could stop the Hitler and Nazi demagoguery.
Neither party of Americans left or right is in that class of failure to the human race as Adolf Hitler.
Each time we make that comparison to a fellow American it diminishes his place in history as the most despicable man ever on the planet… Ever!
Now, as for me and my thoughts on President Obama.
I respect the office of the presidency but I do believe I have a right to tell you that he is taking the country in the wrong direction. I believe he and his Democrat colleagues do not believe that Constitution works for latter day Americans. They all took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, “so help them God”.

  9. On profanity Artie thanks for that too. It happens everywhere now as it seeps deeper into our culture. Young people cuss back at teachers and parents and now hold authority in low-esteem.
I’m thinking that civil discussion is good for everyone.
And, on Hank, suffice it to say … It’s hard to defend the indefensible with the Hitler thang even when the right does it to the left.
But I am being a vigilant American.

  10. DIDI ART Says:

DON’T GET YOUR SELF UPSET OVER SOMEONE ELSE’S DISPARAGING REMARKS. YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE WORLD AND MUST SAVE YOUR ENERGY FOR THE HEALING
YOUR SYSTEM HAS TO USE TO CREATE HEALTH FOR YOUR BODY.

ONLY GOD FORGIVES IN THE END.. NOT YOU, NOT ME, NOT OUR NEIGHBORS..

WE DON’T KNOW WHAT CAUSES PEOPLE TO REMARK IN WAYS WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND..AND WE WILL NEVER KNOW.. PEOPLE HAVE A DIFFERENT TAKE ON DIFFERENT THINGS..THIS MAN DISAGREES WITH OBAMA AND HE DISAGREED WITH HITLER AND FOR SOMEREASON HE MELDED THE TWO IN A BAD REMARK… PEOPLE HAVE SAID THIS ABOUT BUSH, NIXON ETC… AND DID NOT GET THE PRESS THIS PRESIDENT DOES… THIS IS NOT RACIST TO SOME PEOPLE… AND IS RACIST TO OTHERS.

WHEN SOMEONE DOES NOT LIKE A LEADER THEY HAVE THE FREEDOM IN OUR COUNTRY TO SAY HOW THEY FEEL.. EVEN THOUGH IT IS SOMETIMES TASTELESS…

REMEMBER JESSE JACKSON CALLED NYC “HYME TOWN”…
SO PEOPLE SAY “WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL”.. PEOPLE INSULT PEOPLE ALL THE TIME BUT KEEPING IT INSIDE YOURSELF IS A WASTE OF ALL THE GOOD ENERGY YOU HAVE.

YOU GET REMARKS FROM PEOPLE WHO SAY IT IS RACEST BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF THE SKIN INVOLVED OR RACIST BECAUSE OF RELIGION.

TRUTHFULLY, WE MUST BE ALL BE “RACIST” IF WE MAKE REMARKS AGAINST OURSELVES LIKE THAT…BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE RACE THAT WE ALL BELONG TO, ONLY ONE..WHICH IS THE HUMAN RACE..THERE ARE NO OTHER RACES!

THEREFORE I LOOK AT THIS AS A TASTELESS REMARK.. BUT NOT RACIST.

  11. […] IS HANK WILLIAMS, JR.’S FOOT STUCK IN HIS MOUTH OR IS THAT A FOOTBALL? […]

  12. Richard Kimbal Says:

I’ll be brief…Hank Jr. is a moronic micro-cephalic racist. And like all moronic micro-cephalic racists, talks loud, and says nothing!!!

  13. A. NONO MOUS Says:

Military men are not to follow orders if what they are told to do is wrong, like in Viet Nam and the atrocities that came to light after. This is the same as Nazis who “followed orders” killing 6 million Jews and 5 million Christians. Our president has us in an illegal war, acting as a tyrant. He has done so many illegal things, through un-Constitutional acts, which the president has no right to do. I do not support a president who has entered a war without Congress’ permission, Libya, which he has done. I cannot stand behind a president that is joining with a foreign country, Mexico, against one of the states he was elected to defend, Arizona. Here is a small list of just his actions against individual states http://patriotupdate.com/articles/obama-dividing-united-states So just supporting a president who is not respecting the law and his oath as president to defend us from enemies within and without by appointing our enemy into high offices is not something my conscience will ever support. Did you know that many of the social policies he has put in place are the same ones Hitler put in place in Germany?

He has attacked a number of states illegally and the only statement he made protecting us is this:
“The President’s pledge for a new beginning between the United States and the Muslim community takes root here in the Justice Department where we are committed to using criminal and civil rights laws to protect Muslim Americans.”
Everything they have done has hurt the American people and the economy (see him laugh on 60 Minutes about people losing their life savings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNu9xjUwPEk but they just continue doing it. What does that tell you? If he is so smart, why doesn’t he change course? Clinton did. It’s because this is his intention. Look at his history he is anti-Semitic doing work with Farrakhan in Chicago and recently stood against Israel on behalf of Palestinians, who are not even a people, just various Arabs.

Artie, you are half African American but you are also half white and half Jewish, I would think his prejudices against the other half of your mix would be outraged at his bigotry. So Hank Williams is one man with prejudices but Obama’s affect the entire country. To me there is more outrage at that than at Williams.

He put out a phony birth certificate recently. How do I know it’s phony? Besides the fact that the man who created it was shocked that the US govt. would lift it off his site and release it as real? How about father’s place of birth: Kenya. Obama born 1961, Kenya created 1963. Father’s race: African there was no race then called that. The only choices in America then were White, Negro, Oriental, American Indian. And the hospital listed didn’t exist until 2 years after Obama was born.
. Where is the media? He stands up and lies day after day doing things that he then says others are doing, divides the country haves against have nots, and the press stands there and says nothing, not one challenge. They are afraid to be called racist. I’ve never heard one criticism about his race from anyone, it’s about his policies. It’s the media that’s consumed with his color. What about his white half? Can we not judge him on his policies without being racist? If we can’t challenge a black man as president, then we cannot afford a black man as president; all presidents must be able to be confronted on what they are doing. They weren’t afraid to challenge Bush, and rightly so, I challenged him. It’s freedom of speech.

He is the only president and candidate to hide his records. Who is this guy? I wouldn’t follow his orders either.

So when you as part Jew lose your rights to a Muslim, you know who to thank, our Muslim loving president.

    • Liberal Patriot Says:

This type of blithering echo-chamber reactionary comment underscores how low political discourse has fallen in our country. If you’re so right (pun intended), Mr. Mous, come out of the shadows and put your name on your opinions, many of which have already been debunked (like the “birther” noise), more of which are nothing but simple schoolyard name-calling. You add nothing but static to the conversation.

    • naomi riopelle Says:

Mr. Mous…should you ever summon up the courage to identify yourself by your real name, I will respond to some of your remarks…particularly your absurd assertions regarding Obama’s birth certificate…..hard to believe that anyone is still beating that dead horse.

  14. John Harrold Says:

Sometimes it is very appropriate to use some words that offend some people, like the one you used. There is an art to cursing too (no pun intended). Your use was appropriate.

As far as Hank Jr., it is his entire leg.

  15. Jack Carone Says:

He was using an unfortunate example of another unlikely pairing, but choosing Hitler as one of them pushed every hot-button that there is, so bad judgement, but IMHO, nothing else. Peace !

  16. dave heasman Says:

Do we know what Hank III thinks?

  17. If I may briefly comment again. From where I come from as a believer it is vital for human beings to forgive… it is good for the body and the soul. Forgiveness is so important that when Christ was asked by his disciples, “teach us to pray” and most know that He told them to pray in this manner, Our Father which art in Heaven… but at the very end the part most do not pray is this just after the amen: 14 (H)For if you forgive [d]others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But (I)if you do not forgive [e]others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. Matthew 6: 9 -15
And that is good for the heart and good for the soul… I can tell you that.
    Be blessed now.

  18. naomi riopelle Says:

what i find puzzling is that anyone is surprised by this….who did you think he was?

    • Susanella Rogers Says:

Exactly, Natalie. The guy is an uneducated racist drunk who would have gotten nowhere without his father’s famous name. WHY on earth Fox & Friends chose to ask his political opinions speaks only to the agenda of the Fox Channel.
That others are shocked that he’d say what he did IS amazing; who did you all think Hank Jr would sound like, Norman Corwin, maybe? Hemingway? James Carville?
And, as a Jew, I’m kinda surprised that Hank made Hitler sound like a bad guy; I would have thought he’d be a fan.

  19. Trade Martin Says:

Hey friends, what Jr. said was obviously not in good taste and I’m sure if he’d thought about it, realized it was TV and he wasn’t just drinking with the boys at a bust-out honky tonk in Texas, he would have NEVER made the multicultural, offensive reference. As far as I’m concerned….., I’d take Hank Sr. & Brooks Arthur over Hank Jr., Hitler & the President anytime…!!! “GOD BLESS AMERICAN ROCK N’ ROLL” – Trade Martin.

    • naomi riopelle Says:

who cares where he said it? it shows his true character, either way….the only difference is that now more people know about it.

  20. Shemp Lugosi Says:

From what I know about Hank Williams Senior, I believe he would be very ashamed of his son.

    • david plenn Says:

Best Name Ever: Shemp Lugosi! brilliant! Much hipper than “Marilyn Manson”.

Hank Sr. was an alcoholic with a lot of talent and drive. Hank Jr. is an alcoholic with a speck of talent, who’s been drafting off his father’s tailwinds forever. When he was sober, Hank Sr. probably would have been embarrassed of Jr. before this. This just confirms what we ALL suspected anyway: he’s a moron who blusters his way through life.

  21. Bill Scherer Says:

Hmmm! Should Hank be yanked or spanked? I say ignored. He’s just another bonehead. Give him any attention and he’ll keep runnin’ with it. Then we waste time on him rather than talking about things that matter. He does have a right to his opinion right or wrong, but if we don’t give him any attention he would probably just sulk off to his corner.

  22. Alan Says:

What a plethora of incisive comments! After reading through this diversity of reactions, about the only thing I can add is this: My wife & I now have a home in Tennessee. What we see here is a lot of difference of opinion, but expressed with mutual respect. I’m sure there are “good ol’ boys” around here somewhere, but we’ve NEVER encountered that kind of extremism. This “new South” is very comfortable for us part time Californians!

  23. Anthony Walsh Says:

Love it!! Guess they never do Artie 😉

    Keep on pushing forward!!

    Anthony Walsh

  24. What’s the big deal? Maybe he should not have said it but other people have said worse and Hussein puts his pant’s on like any other crooked politician screws them on one leg at a time..Oh yeah what about Freedom of Speech??

    • naomi riopelle Says:

the right to free speech simply means that one can say whatever he wants without fear of imprisonment….however, it does not make one any less of an a**hole.
