THE NO KILL ANIMAL SHELTER REVOLOUTION!

October 14, 2011

Hi, Artie,

I know you care deeply about animals, so I want to update you on progress being made in badly-needed animal shelter reform and evolution.

Not only is there great work being done in numerous communities to end most shelter killing, but there is also an organization, Shelter Revolution, showing the way to doing away completely with the “prison” model of animal shelters.

In this vision, these depressing jails are replaced with community Adoption Centers where homeless dogs and cats are showcased in communal living situations, where wagging tails replace frightened faces and cage-induced problems. Think doggy day-care with creative marketing for adoptions. To prepare animals with behavior issues not yet ready to join the groups, a National Rehab Training Center will educate volunteers to foster and work with animals who currently would have little chance of survival.

My best to you as always,

Jack Carone.

    Artie,

FYI, the privately-funded breed rescue shelters, such as Doberman Rescue (where I adopted my two dogs), Boxer Rescue, French Poodle Rescue, etc. and all of the non-breed-specific rescue organizations are no-kill. Any dog not adopted is free to live out his or her life.

A friend in City Government who is close to this issue tells me that there are plans to make Los Angeles shelters no-kill as soon as resources are available, but, like anything that happens in government, change takes time.

    Best,
    Susanella

      Hi, Susanella,
There are a number of communities that have successfully implemented lifesaving programs and are saving the large majority of animals who end up homeless and in shelters. With much respect to your friend, who I know and appreciate, these communities turned things around relatively quickly, while our city has been predicting success for many years without achieving it. The reasons are many. We will continue to lobby for the change we now know is possible.
Shelter Revolution is advocating a type of shelter/Adoption Center which would make it far easier to meet the lifesaving goals. I hope you will check it out.
Thank you for caring and adopting,
      Jack
