AND NOW …”OCCUPY TOGETHER” AND HEIDI LITTLE “SHINE”!

October 21, 2011

IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS I’VE BEEN READING ABOUT THE “OCCUPY TOGETHER” MOVEMENT, WHERE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD HAVE GATHERED TO PROTEST AGAINST INEQUALITY, MONETARY DISFUNCTION, AND THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE.

MY FRIEND SINGER SONGWRITER, HEIDI LITTLE AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS AND I WONDERED HOW LONG IT WILL IT BE BEFORE THE PEACEFUL MOVEMENT ESCALATES INTO VIOLENCE?

Heidi said,”I have always had hope and our future nestled in my heart. I have always spoken and acted out against injustice on all levels. Our hearts and minds have seen and taken in so much devastation, killing, brutality. And all the while I wrote the songs.

Love and care is welling up in the hearts and minds of us all. And not a second too soon. With all of our social and environmental concerns, the growing debates on funding wars when schools are closing and people are starving. It ends with love, compassion and care.

I am sure you have seen the same shocking, brutal footage of police brutality amongst the peaceful  people in our city’s and streets, I would never claim to be so naïve as to believe there weren’t people out there just to cause trouble for troubles sake. Unacceptable !! No one is allowed to touch another person to cause bodily harm. It is illegal. And no one is allowed to do that. I cannot stress this factor enough .  “ If we just stand, hold hands and smile, not even a word needs to be uttered. Just steel iron will “ No one can do anything to a person doing that without being in the wrong.

I have come to learn that In this co creative world,  we get what we think. If we think this movement will make change for the positive, it will ! If we believe that our prayers and hopes are going out to the government and law enforcement so they understand and make the appropriate changes it will ! If we think that each little thing we do for others helps it does! Wherever our intentions are directed they connect !  For better or for worse. How do we want this to turn out? What is the elegant solution? We have all heard it this past week. Stop funding the war, and put the money back into the schools and the people. Rebuilding, reconstructing that which no longer serves the people and the earth.  If killing is legal, we can make anything good stick. And last.

I have been watching the change spread across the globe. And it makes me excited and happy, it gives me great hope, and every day I say the same prayer: God bless the people of the world with clean water, sustainable food, education, health care, dental care, suitable housing, positive role models and care providers for all, clean energy, affordable standards of living, and country’s, states, and city’s that take care of the people first.  We came here to be together. No more divide and conquer.

United we shall overcome.

Thanks Artie for involving me in the beauty you are creating. We don’t need any more violence, we need love. And that my friend is all I will stand for.

  1. Heidi Little has composed a strong anthem that inspires people to action in some means. Occupy Together is a movement that, like Artie, I’m still reading about more than understanding distinctly. From the fervent activity in U.S. cities and towns, the message speaking to me says ‘do something’. In the 1960s, I remember when people simply did not discuss politics ‘out loud’ for fear of offending someone. And yet, Heidi’s song is universally applicable to any political movement, whether purposeful in intent, or general and welcoming to a cause. People have long forgotten the power of one. One person, one vote, one opinion expressed out loud. It may be one your best friend or neighbor doesn’t understand or agree with but it’s out there, for them to consider. If people would, as Heidi sings (quite well by the way), let themselves shine, we’d have more leaders and less followers, that good old spirit of independence from a few hundred years ago rising up and moving people out of their La-z-boy recliners and to the polls, no matter what side of an issue. Heidi, well done, more of her songs please, Artie.

At first blush, it is heartening to see so many people gathered together, en masse, for a movement that seeks a reversal of what some may call “blind greed,” yet others call “the way the business world works.” It is ironic that you can get thousands of people to gather together for a faceless, leaderless ‘concept’ event, and yet it begs the question: How many of those assembled across the country have registered to vote and actively voted in the last 8 years in their city, state, and federal elections?

Next question: Are those who gather, ready to rush out and join in because there is no leader and because they’ve “heard” this is a good thing to do? Or do they understand the precepts of the disagreement? Do they know and can they name the names of those corporations who are being called privileged/greedy and the harbingers of capitalism? I’m wondering where some think the dollars of social programs come from to feed/clothe/provide for aging seniors, hungry, homeless children, and scholarships for people to attend schools that they don’t attend, but for which they collect checks?

The biggest crime of ‘the wealthy’, the faceless group they are so ready to protest, is that they are in charge, it seems, of the financial futures of millions of people. Whether they have funded and voted their influential friends into leadership positions (the way I see so often in Texas state politics), or whether through apathy and ignorance, someone slipped into an office, a cabinet position, and now exerts unacceptable influence over the future of someone such that now, finally, today, they decide they are ticked off and want to Occupy Together.

Greed in any manifestation is never good. Neither is apathy. For every single person who finds a reason/cause/invitation to gather, whether in peace or in violence, to protest something, I’d only hope that you continue to study the messages being stated from city to city. After all, in some cities, violence has erupted and yet in others, none. Why is that? Because there is no common thread of leadership, no unity of message, no quality control or checks and balances to define the voice of reason or the voice of dissent.

If one can avoid suggesting that “Shakespeare didn’t write his own stuff,” what with the new movie coming out and all, perhaps it would be acceptable to offer Richard III’s “now is the winter of our discontent.”

I’ll be the first to confess that I’m the last to grasp the full ramifications of the Occupy Together movement, local, state, or nationwide. I do know two things: (1) I’ll continue to vote and make my joy or dissent exercising with my right to express my opinion within the structure proffered by 200+ years of doing something right as a nation upon whom many eyes are viewing our actions and decisions.

And, (2), I’m going to keep listening to the YouTube video of Heidi Little’s ‘Shine’ because there’s a groove that manages to come through loud and clear: “It’s a long way back to where you’ve come from, gonna see yourself shining in the sun, and take a look ahead to where you’re, everything will be just fine.” I’m going to keep an eye and an ear on Occupy Together and see who emerges as really being in charge. Someone always is.

  8. Whenever something like this springs up it is vitally important to ‘follow the money’. George Soros’ Tides foundation is a lot of it, the Communist Party of America another portion and the Muslim Brotherhood under a nicer sounding name is also. While Europeans said Egypt and Libya were student uprisings, it couldn’t be further from the truth. As everyone can now see it was the same Muslim Brotherhood that ousted the Shah from Iran in ’79 and replaced it with Khomeni and extremist Islamic Sharia law. They are doing the same in recent elections in Africa. Egypt and Libya are now run by Islamic fundamentalists.
Americans had better wake up. Why do you think the administration got behind the occupiers, who are defecating, drugging and having sex in public to the cost of millions to taxpayers to clean up their mess? As they have said “let no crisis go to waste.” They will back anything that draws attention from the illegal and un-Constitutional things they are doing to our country.
These are not protestors for good, they are uneducated trouble makers blaming capitalism, from which they all profit, instead of holding the true culprits accountable, our government. It is our government who is raping us economically.
When our government demonizes the Tea Party, which had specific points about cutting waste and honoring our Constitution and left not a piece of trash in their wake, and praises this rabble it is evident what they are up to, and it is no good.
Just because someone marches and holds up a sign it doesn’t mean it is honorable. It is the cause that holds honor and the way it is represented that deserves respect. This situation has neither.
