OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN…”I HONESTLY LOVE YOU”
September 26, 2012
In 1974, one of the first calls I receive after taking over as head of IRVING/ALMO music is from my friend, Olivia Newton-John who is looking for material. Except for their hits, I know very little about the catalog, so I hold my first casting meeting to take suggestions from everyone in publishing. The professional staff, secretaries and mailroom boys all pitch ideas to me.
After listening to quite a few songs, one catches my attention, “I HONESTLY LOVE YOU” by Jeff Barry (“TELL LAURA I LOVE HER”, “DA DOO-RUN-RUN”) and Peter Allen (“I GO TO RIO”). I’m late for an appointment so I only have a chance to hear one verse and barely scan the lyric. We ship it to London as quickly as we can along with an idea I have, Brian Wilsons “GOD ONLY KNOWS”, from our Beach Boys catalog.
When Olivia comes over to my office with her producer, John Farrar, and plays a dub for me, I‟m almost in tears. The first thing I say to them is, “This should be the Record of the Year!” You can imagine my surprise when MCA records doesn‟t even want to put it out as a single because, “It‟s too slow!” That‟s when Jerry Moss let me use Harold Childs, and his top A&M record promotion staff to break it out of the album.
Not only does “I HONESTLY LOVE YOU” become a multi-million platinum seller, it becomes the record of the year in 1974!
OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN TRIES TO SQUEEZE ANOTHER HIT OUT OF JEFF BARRY AND ARTIE.
EPILOGUE..I FLEW BACK TO NY FROM LONDON WITH A LETTER FROM OLIVIA AND JOHN FARRAR TELLING THE GRAMMY PRODUCERS THAT I WAS TO ACCEPT THE GRAMMY ON THEIR BEHALF IF THEY SHOULD WIN RECORD OF THE YEAR. JUST BEFORE THE TELECAST THE GRAMMY PEOPLE ASKED ME TO LET PAUL SIMON, ART GARFUNKLE, AND JOHN LENNON ACCEPT THE AWARD “BECAUSE IT WOULD HELP THE RATINGS.” I DID , OF COURSE, AND WAS LATER REWARDED AND MADE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF RECORDING ARTS AND SCIENTISTS.
I LEFT THE STUDIO T HAT NIGHT WITHOUT SEEING THE PRESENTATION AND HIDING THE TEARS IN MY EYES. TONIGHT I FOUND THE VIDEO OF ANDY WILLIAMS AND THE STAR PRESENTERS AND I STILL HAD A LUMP IN MY THROAT. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUlR8jWUKd8&feature=share

THE LAURA PINTO OLDIES CONNECTION
May 2, 2012
WHEN I STARTED BLOGGING ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO, WHENEVER I NEEDED INFORMATON ON SONGS AND ARTISTS OF THE ‘60S, ‘70S, AND ‘80S I WENT TO LAURA PINTO OLDIE CONNECTION AND FOUND WHATEVER I NEED…SINCE THEN I’VE GONE BACK DOZENS OF TIMES.
NOW LAURA HAS UPDATED HER ALREADY FANTASTIC SITE AND WELCOMES ALL OF YOU TO VISIT
My intent is and always has been for Oldies Connection to be a “one-stop-shopping place” (as I refer to it) for info on singers and groups from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s … that is: Where are they now? Who among them are still touring and recording and making appearances? From the beginning, Oldies Connection has had links to artist sites and official fan pages as well as lists like birthdays, passings, oldies radio stations, etc., plus a few original writeups. In 2011 I undertook a massive expansion of the site which resulted in more than 900 (!) new pages being added. Each page is dedicated to a specific artist or group, with links to official sites (where applicable); social networks (also where applicable); and YouTube search results/channels and Wikipedia pages. This translates to literally thousands of links. The Artists of Oldies Connection page has links for all of these individual artist pages in alphabetical order by first name, so it’s easy for everyone to find their favorites.
Oldies Connection is ever changing and expanding; it will never be a “static” website. I plan on continuing to add to the site, including more in the way of original writings, reviews, bios, and so forth. I am very pleased with the way Oldies Connection has evolved since I first conceived it in 2003, and I’m most appreciative of the responses I’ve received from visitors to and fans of the website. Thank you all for stopping by! : http://lpintop.tripod.com/oldiesconnection/ OR www.oldiesconnection.com)

ARTIE WAYNE ON THE WEB OCTOBER BULLETIN BOARD
October 27, 2011
My longtime friend Grammy winning producer, engineer, and music supervisor Brooks Arthur called me up to thank me for the article I wrote about him a few weeks ago. He also asked if I would post his thank you to everyone who took a moment to write a comment…
Artie:
“Since I do not have access to your entire mailing list, please be kind enough to pass my thank you note along to all your readers for me.
WOW! Quite an experience … thinking I was gonna’ read an article (a little blog) and then BLAMMO, messages and wonderful notes from you, your readers, my colleagues and of course … Friends. Well, truth be known, everyone of you guys and girls and groups and singers & musicians & producers & engineers & studios have helped to make me who I am today. Every session, every moment, every laugh, every tear, every hit recordand those records that should have made it but didn’t, are all a part of my heart forever!
It took alot of doing to scroll thru the tributes and remembrances without welling up a few times, but I powered thru it.
Yours in song, FOREVER!”

This seems to be the year of the documentary, with the Phil Ochs film, “THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE”, and GEORGE HARRISON’S, “LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD”, tearing up our collective conciousness. Now we can look forward to BEACH BOY, DENNIS WILSON and THE COWSILLS coming to theaters, and finally the long awaited film celebrating BOB MARLEY which is in final negotiations, and will be on our screens late next year!
People have been asking me how my stem cell procedure (using my adult stem cells…not embryos) is working. I tell the them that I’ve gone from feeling incredible for a few hours…to feeling like I’m gonna’ die! As the weeks go by though, I’m starting to even out and feel optimistic that I’ll walk again!
IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS WE’VE BEEN READING ABOUT THE “OCCUPY TOGETHER” MOVEMENT, WHERE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD HAVE GATHERED TO PROTEST AGAINST INEQUALITY, MONETARY DISFUNCTION, AND THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE.
WHEN ASKED IF SHE WOULD ALLOW HER SONG, “SHINE” TO BE USED AS THE ANTHEM FOR THE MOVEMENT, SINGER/SONGWRITER HEIDI LITTLE, SAID SHE’S “HAPPY TO LET ANY ORGANIZATION USE HER SONG AS LONG AS IT’S IN THE NAME OF PEACE.” http://heidilittle.com

The quote of the day comes from Producer, composer, and all around good guy, QUINCY JONES. Even though I haven’t seen Q in years, I remember the time that we spent together as one of the highlights of my life! I read something recently he said to his critics that inspires me whenever I get low on self esteem. “Not one drop of my self-worth depends on your acceptance of me”

book. The title reflects the the entire mentality of the business in an
era that produced more classic music and creativity then in any other
time in it’s history. The book reveals how it all went down through the
journey of one man …..
“Artie, I got your book last night and read much of it through the night you have one incredible career. It’s an honor that you put me in your book literally in the same sentence with Paul Simon… How cool is that! I played a very, very, very small part, but what a part it was. You stopped by my office, at E B Marks Music and my ears heard that Joey Powers demo, Meet Me at Midnight Mary, and it was then I told you, that’s a hit, master it just the way it is. It was then that I told you to take it over to Amy Records. You did that … added a bass and the rest is history. Wow!”

peggy santiglia davison (The Angels) Says: “Hey Artie, I always knew you were talented and smart and the Blog is great. It’s so interesting to me because even though many of us were in the thick of it, we didn’t always know what others were thinking or doing behind the scenes. Maybe that’s my take as a performer since I was on the “road” so much back then, but it is facinating to read the stories. Even just reading the comment list, I see the names of some very long ago business and personal friends and it brings back many memories, mostly good:-). Much success to you in all your future endeavors.

“Artie, I’m loving your book and literally could not put it down until Chapter 22 when nature finally came knocking after my drinking an inordinate amount of coffee. Your writing style is lively and conversational. In a previous incarnation as a journalist I learned to “Write like you talk unless you’re from the Bronx.” It appears that you have come along and totally dispelled that adage. I love the story about your standing-up and telling a roomful of people that you don’t have to accept being exploited merely because you’re black; and nobody in the room was even aware of your racial make-up. Too funny. So much for the argument, right?”
Mark L. Ostrovsky
Richard Kimball Says: “Congrats Artie..Obviously you have waaaaaay too much time on your hands!!!!!”
Ash Wells Says: “Congrats Artie!! Truly always awesome & Informative stories which I love to read. Keep Goin’ Strong.. Love Your Work!”

For the last three years I’ve been writing my book about my 50 years in the music business. I was warned not to write about certain people, certain companies, and certain things which made me want to tell more.
As my blog became more popular with over 1,870,000 VIEWS, I began to get bolder and relentlessly went after large corporations and social networks until they discontinued some of their questionable practices.
I’m proud to have been the first to write about Tommy James’ shocking book, “ME, THE MOB, AND THE MUSIC” and have an exclusive no-holds barred three part interview with my pal from the past and former label mate…probably the only such event where the participants didn’t have to go into the witness protection program right after the show!
In my book, “I DID IT FOR A SONG”, I write about my first hand experiences songwriting (Aretha, Michael Jackson,Tony Orlando, Cher, etc.) producing (the Kingsmen, The Shirelles, the Guess Who) and getting hits for Warner Brothers Music (“You’re 16″, “R+R Heaven”) and Irving/ Almo music (“I Honestly Love You”, “Our Day Will Come”).

BERT BERNS R.I.P. ROCK IN PERPETUITY!
January 1, 2010
BERT BERNS 11/8/29 – 12/30/67
“The first time I met Bert Berns (“Twist & Shout” “Piece Of My Heart”) was at a little bachelor party Artie Resnick, Kenny Young had for Jeff Barry when he married Ellie Greenwich. From that time…until he passed…he always had an open door for me.
Although I’m bi-racial, up until the time I met him, my musical tastes ranged from pop to country. Bert helped me get more in touch with my African-American roots through the R+B music he loved so much. I remember the day he wrote “Hang On Sloopy”…he grabbed me in the hall at 1650 Broadway (where we both had offices) and played it for me on his funky, old stand up piano. I was so blown away I couldn’t write for a week!!!
We both had another connection…a serious one. We both had congenital heart problems. I was lucky…In 1965 I was one of the first people in the U.S. to have open heart surgery. I made medical history by walking around 36 hours after the procedure. Bert and I would sit and talk…sometimes for hours…about the operation. How I felt?…Did it make a difference? He knew it was still a big risk and he had a family to consider. Now every time I hear one of his songs…or feel a little of his soul in my own music…I thank God I was privileged to know him.”

ELLIE GREENWICH R.I.P. ROCK IN PERPETUITY!
August 28, 2009
ELLIE GREENWICH 10/23/4o – 8/26/09
When Andy Caploe and his wife Susan e-mailed me about the passing of Ellie Greenwich, I was devastated. She was one of the first people I worked with after I left Aldon Music as a staff writer…and one of the few people I could talk to about almost anything. She was everybody’s home girl. One of the most talented and down to earth people I’ve ever met. I was so happy to reconnect with her on FACEBOOK!
“I was hanging out at Paul Vance’s (“Catch A Falling Star”, “Itsy Bitsy Bikini”) office where Ellie and Tony Powers who wrote “Today I Met The Boy I’m Gonna’ Marry” for Darlene Love and “Why Do Lovers Break Each Other’s Hearts” for Bobbi Soxx and the Blue Jeans, would come in and play their new songs for Paul’s opinion. If I was lucky enough to be there at the time, I’d be invited to come in and listen as well.
One day I’m starting a new song with Paul’s nephew Danny Jordan (The Detergents). Not only do we write with each other, but everybody we can corner who comes into the office. One day Ellie walks in. She asks us if we mind if is waits for her fiancé, Jeff Barry (“Tell Laura I Love Her”) who’s picking her up for lunch. About a half hour later the three of us have finished “You Should’ve Told Me”
We play it for Jeff when he arrives and he seems to like it, but doesn’t say very much. A few days later, Paul Vance gets The Angels (“Til”) to record it.
While Danny and I sit daydreaming of songwriting super stardom, collaborating with this talented young lady on dozens of future hits, Jeff has plans of his own. He and Ellie start writing with Phil Spector and create songs that not only become classics, but songs that define the ‘60s as well.”*

Thank You Ellie for all the joy, passion, and music you’ve given the world…and the friendship and support you’ve given me when I most needed it.

HAPPY DAY AFTER FATHER’S DAY!
June 22, 2009
I was raised by a single mother. Never knew or even saw a picture of my father. Yesterday I didn’t feel sad, just a bit empty as I thought of some of my friends and the relationships they had with their fathers.
Songwriter and Producer Jeff Barry, is always someone I’ve looked up to…and not just because he’s about a foot taller than me! Before I got into the music business, I remember first seeing Jeff’s name on one of my favorite records, “Tell Laura I Love Her” (Raleigh/ Barry) by Ray Peterson. I loved his music (“Da Doo Run Run”, “Doo Wah Diddy”).
I didn’t see Jeff for a couple years, then while I was visiting my friend songwriter, Paul Williams (”We’ve Only Just Begun”, “Old Fashioned Love Song”) on the A&M Records lot. Jeff, who had just signed a co-publishing deal with Irving/ Almo Music, came in and played me a song he had written, “Walking In The Sun”
WALKING IN THE SUN Words and music by Jeff Barry
Well, things have been goin’ wrong long enough to know when everything’s just right
I’ve been walking in the dark long enough to know when I’ve finally seen the light
I’ve been losing long enough to know when I finally have won
And even the blind man can tell when he’s walking in the sun.
Well, I’ve cried enough tears to recognize this feeling of a smile
I’ve been bottom rung long enough to know when I’m doing it in style
I’ve been running long enough to know when there’s no more need to run
(O Lord) Even the blind man can tell when he’s walking in the sun.
The wind is at my back and I’m sailing on a ship long overdue
I’ve blown so many chances, I ain’t gonna blow this one with you
And I’ve seen enough bad times to know when the good times have begun
O Lord – Even the blind man can tell when he’s walking in the sun
(Oh yeah) Even the blind man can tell when he’s walking in the sun.

I sat there with my mouth dropped open, fighting back a tear. I always admired and respected Jeff for his ability to tap into the teen market and realistically express their emotions…but I realized his writing had reached a new level. Although I was working for Warner Brothers Music as general Professional Manager, and it was my job to plug my company’s songs, I gave a demo of “Walking In The Sun” to my friend, Bob Monoco who recorded it the following week with Chaka Kahn and her group Rufus!
It was years later that I learned that the song was written for his father, who was blind and only this morning did I read the complete story behind the song, in Jeff’s own words on his official website.
The next time I placed one of Jeff’s songs, it was in a more of an “official” capacity. I was hired to run Irving/ Almo, and on my first day on the job, I gave Olivia Newton John, “I Honestly Love You”, that Jeff wrote with the late Peter Allen, which became the record of the year in 1974!
