Lester Chambers, lead singer on, “THE TIME HAS COME TODAY” by the Chambers Brothers says, “If you feel moved by this outrage please share this with the world! Its TIME to tell the truth!!! HELP Me make this VIRAL so everyone pays attention to the Artist who bring joy to life… I’m about to be 72… IT’S TIME!!!”

At first I was annoyed when I got hundreds of notifications that the lead singer of THE CHAMBERS BROTHERS, Lester Chambers, had tagged my photo on Facebook. Then I read the cardboard sign (above) and wondered why he didn’t contact me sooner!

I’m facing a similar situation with getting paid for the cuts of mine that Michael Jackson recorded. It’s hard to believe that Michael’s estate earned 350 million dollars since he passed away, while I earned less than $5000, from my songs on posthumously released albums that contain some of his biggest hits!

Lester is right, only about 1% of those of us who’ve been screwed can afford to sue, like Lester I’m one of the 99% who can’t, however I have an idea.

Lester’s post got an astonishing 7,264 LIKEs, 1,416 COMMENTS, and 5,888 SHARES on FACEBOOK in the last 48 hours, and could kick start the campaign to start some “CLASS ACTION AUDITS” going!

“THE TIME HAS COME TODAY!” Please take a look at these articles and join me in our fight for justice! I have an influential readership that can move mountains. I expect to have over 2 million page views on my blog by the end of next week. https://artiewayne.wordpress.com/2011/05/14/audit-audit-audit/ AS WELL AS https://artiewayne.wordpress.com/2011/05/24/the-first-class-action-audit-against-the-universal-music-group/

I’VE GOTCHA’ COVERED!

November 9, 2011

When I was a song plugger back in the ‘60s for Warner Brothers Music, in addition to getting new songs recorded by the hottest artists on the charts, we had to get songs from our catalog cut as well as songs from current films to help promote the movie every time it was played on the radio.

I remember the Warner Raiders (which I nicknamed my professional staff) got over 100 cover records on “The Summer Knows- theme from “Summer of ‘42”, in a three month period, which earned us a lot respect. We also had unexpected hits from the catalog when I updated songs like “You’re 16” for Ringo Starr or super creative casting ideas like getting Al Green to cover, “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”.

Today artists and managers realize that song writing and  publishing royalties are sometimes the only source of income from their “Multi-Platinum” CDs, since the  artist is usually charged with everything a company can get away with, including the making of million dollar videos.

When I think back, I remember hearing stories about Beatle manager, Brian Epstein sitting down with Lennon and McCartney and forcing them to write more original songs for economic reasons…Andrew Loog Oldham convinced Jagger and Richards to do the same, which changed the musical direction of two of the greatest “cover” groups of all time!

And speaking of covers, I was there with “Papa” Joe Jackson, the day that Michael and the Jackson 5 left Motown. They were weary of being forced to do “covers” on their albums and “other peoples songs” on their singles. I was able to help Joe get a $25,000 dollar advance, within 48 hours for their sub-publishing around from Freddie Bienstock, for world rights to  songs that were yet to be written by unproven writers (Michael, Randy, and Jackie). The deal ultimately included “Beat it” and most of the compositions on the “Thriller” album!!.

Okay…Okay, The world’s a better place because of these self-generating artists…but how many artists
today are capable of really writing “Great” songs all the time? I’d be happy as a music lover and consumer to have a couple of familiar songs on every CD that I buy. Maybe even one I could sing along with.

I’d like to hear Bruno Mars sing, “Wonderful, Wonderful”, Katy Perry do “MacArthur Park”, Bono and Mary J. Blige kill, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” for starters.

WHAT SONG FROM THE PAST WOULD YOU LIKE TO HEAR REMADE TODAY AND BY WHOM? (YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS BELOW THE ARTICLE)

Sometimes I may be the lone soldier you see and hear who is asking questions, seeking answers, and unearthing revelations but I am uplifted and humbled by the crowd who is joining me in the quest.

About a month ago I did a story on how some artists like JUSTIN BEIBER AND LADY GAGA, get paid per view on YouTube (which are in the millions) while a new or lesser known artist gets nothing!! https://artiewayne.wordpress.com/2011/09/22/can-youtube-save-the-music-business/

As usual I got some excellent comments from many of my irate, influential, and powerful  readers who joined the battle to get justice for everyone, then the week before last I received an e-mail from YouTube telling me NOW I could get paid for every view, by splitting fees from ads placed beside my video. I got so excited that before I looked to see where to sign up I emailed my supportive friends that we had won our latest battle against the powers that be.

Dear ArtieWayne,

Your YouTube account ArtieWayne might be eligible to earn revenue from the playbacks of your videos.

Making money from your videos is easy. Here’s how it works: First sign into your YouTube account. Then review and complete the steps outlined here: (BLANK URL)

If your account is enabled, we may place ads next to the videos you submit for monetization. You will earn a share of the revenue from the ads as long as you meet the program requirements.

Thanks and good luck!

The YouTube Team

When I clicked onto the url it said, “ERROR NOT ELGIBLE FOR THIS FEATURE”.

I REALIZED THEY WERE THUMBING THEIR NOSES AT ME…BUT IN THE PROCESS THEY ADMITTED THEY ARE PAYING SOME PEOPLE AND NOT PAYING OTHERS…EXACTLY AS I SUSPECTED!

Then about a dozen friends told me that late last week they were sent same email I was sent by youtube, but were allowed to sign up.

Then this article ran in the New York Times http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/113715/cash-in-youtube-video-nytimes

I’m happy to say that ARTIE WAYNE ON THE WEB has been able to change the questionable ACCOUNTING policies of giant corporations. I’m even happier to say that some of my investigations have led to the discontinuing of certain practices and released millions of dollars into the hands of people it belonged to! But this clever act of appeasement by YouTube isn’t enough!

(I’M NOT SHOUTING…BUT IT’S EASIER TO TYPE THIS WAY WITH ONE FINGER)

NOW I APPRECIATE THE MEAGER OFFERING THAT HAS BEEN SO WELL ORCHESTRATED AND WELL PUBLICIZED BY YOUTUBE…BUT NOW I WANT TO BE PAID RETROACTIVELY…I’VE EARNED IT!

LAST CHRISTMAS, THERE WERE 27 VIDEOS UP ON YOUTUBE, WITH COMBINED VIEWS OF OVER 500,000. USING MY SONG “LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE” (CLINTON JR./ WAYNE) BY MICHAEL I SAW ADS ON THE SIDE OF THE VIDEO, WHICH MEANT SOMEBODY GOT PAID.

IN TWO WEEKS I’LL BE RECEIVING A STATEMENT FROM WARNER BROTHERS MUSIC, THE PUBLISHER OF THE SONG, WHICH I’LL SHARE WITH ALL OF YOU WHICH WILL NOT ONLY SAY HOW MUCH I’VE EARNED FROM YOUTUBE BUT ALSO WHAT I EARNED FROM HAVING TWO OF MY SONGS IN FOUR POSTHMOUS MICHAEL JACKSON CDS.

IN THE TWO AND A HALF YEARS SINCE MICHAELS DEATH I’VE RECEIVED LESS THAN $4000 FROM BOTH SONGS IN MECHANICAL INCOME. LAST WEEK IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT MICHAEL JACKSON WAS THE HIGHEST PAID CELEBRITY LAST YEAR EARNING $170 MILLION DOLLARS…SOMETHING IS WRONG… SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG!

Author/ publicist Bob Levinson says,” Dunno if I’m repeating myself here, but want to make sure you know I classify your book as a “must read” for anybody who was in the music business or interested in the music business when it was more about the music than about the business. Gone are the days; shamefully, they ain’t coming back anytime soon.

Warmest regards, Bob www.robertslevinson.com

Chuck Negron…3 DOG NIGHT http://www.threedognight.com/index.html

“I Did it for a Song” is a poignant tale told in fast-paced, first person, you-are-there style. You never want to stop reading it as you work your way through the heyday of 60s, 70s, and 80s music at its best, from the Brill Building to the bright lights of LA and all stops in between. Artie Wayne is a born storyteller, and every day of his career in the music business as a songwriter led to simply more and more exciting times. He’s met everyone, knows everyone, and has helped create more good connections for music professionals to have their music heard, recorded, and shared over the years. Outside the music world, Wayne is a just-plain-great writer and he cites Sidney Sheldon’s encouragement, “just write, Artie” as the impetus that set him off and writing. Don’t be offput that this is an e-book. It doesn’t matter if you’re reading it on your computer, your Kindle or the back of an envelope. It’s the inside skinny as he relates stories and answers with the real versions of what happened, because he was there. First-person fun, bright lights, big names, the music industry who’s who that includes those on their way up, and down, in the business. Dare you to put it down, once you pick it up. Artie Wayne: singer, songwriter, wordsmith

Stephen-Craig Aristei , independent film and TV music supervisor comments, “The pictures and the stories are all “greats”…When people read your book, they will realize how each and everyone of their lives was touched in some way, by what you did…We were a part of the industry when “people had fun” with what they did….Joel is right when he says “we are all so lucky to have had contact with so many of these people”…..I was blessed to work with, fight with and have success with many of the true “greats” of our industry….And Artie, you are one of them…You are truly the last of that breed of creative individual who truly make the music and the business great….you are one of the “Last of the Greats” ! ! Everyone who has ever loved music, needs to read your book….!”

Bernadette Carroll Says: As Clay Cole said it best “Weren’t We Something”….Thanks Artie!”

Barry Oslander Producer Says, “Artie like you, I have been waiting for this day since I read your book months before it came out and read it in one day…. Your a man who just wrote some more music history which in turn will bring bring back many minds to dreaming of the good old days and the way it was in the days when the music biz was great and we all were starting out and were friends joined by the music in our blood….Good luck with your book.”

Jerry Ross Producer (Bobby Hebb, Keith, Spanky and our Gang) comments, “Artie: New York Yankees 1930….
Lefty Gomez made the well known comment: “I’d rather be lucky than good”
You are blessed to be lucky; being in the right place at the right time, and so good at what you have accomplished…Congrats on your book!!!”

Mike Edwards Says, “Hi Artie. You were kind enough to send me an advance copy of your book, “I Did It For A Song”. Even though it arrived around the Christmas period, I could not put it down. The details of your career in the music business are well told and are fast moving. Anyone who knows, say, New York and Los Angeles, would feel that they were right there beside you as you covered the ground in these cities. I note that you experienced the sting of prejudice but, like our President, you just brushed it off and kept moving, demonstrating to us that, whatever barriers are put in your way, you can still succeed in this country.

It is a fun read; whether it is about you trying to get Motown Records to issue a Michael Jackson Christmas album or you trying to collect royalties from dangerous sounding characters in Germany. These are just two of the many incidents that grace the pages of this book. I wish you every success with it, Artie.”
I DID IT FOR A SONG”, perhaps the best ever title of a music industry
book. The title reflects the the entire mentality of the business in an
era  that produced more classic music and creativity then in any other
time in it’s history. The book reveals how it all went down through the
journey of one man …..
Harvey Cooper former head of 20th Century Records promotion.

“Artie, I got your book last night and read much of it through the night you have one incredible career. It’s an honor that you put me in your book literally in the same sentence with Paul Simon… How cool is that! I played a very, very, very small part, but what a part it was. You stopped by my office, at E B Marks Music and my ears heard that Joey Powers demo, Meet Me at Midnight Mary, and it was then I told you, that’s a hit, master it just the way it is. It was then that I told you to take it over to Amy Records. You did that … added a bass and the rest is history. Wow!”

Tony DiGirolamo tvlights@aol.com

Ed Silvers former CEO WARNER BROTHERS MUSICsays, “Forever a great promoter/publisher/writer, Artie has been my artist, my friend, and co-writer through many years of music business. It has always been more than fun to work together!! I wish we lived closer to one another”

Mike Millius Says: “Dude, The best and most realistic Woodstock Experience I’ve ever read. Honest in it’s telling and observations.

HAVE KNOWN ARTIE WAYNE SINCE THE EARLY AND COLORFUL DAYS ON BROADWAY IN NYC, WHEN WE RUBBED ELBOWS..I BELIEVE HE USED TO BE AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS ‘THE SHADOW’ BECAUSE OF THE OUTRAGEOUS HAT AND CAPE-LIKE COAT HE USED TO WEAR..ARTIE HAS DEDICATED HIMSELF TO KEEPING US INFORMED MUSICALLY FROM HIS BROAD LIFE EXPERIENCE IN MUSIC AND LIFE, AND HIS COLLECTED RESPECT FROM MANY OF US WHO HE HAS WRITTEN ABOUT.

FROM ANOTHER BROADWAY SURVIVOR..LARRY, ‘RHINESTONE RABBI’ WEISS.

Your story needs to be told via a film, or even a TV mini-series. It is fascinating!

John Harrold

peggy santiglia davison   (The Angels) Says: “Hey Artie, I always knew you were talented and smart and the Blog is great. It’s so interesting to me because even though many of us were in the thick of it, we didn’t always know what others were thinking or doing behind the scenes. Maybe that’s my take as a performer since I was on the “road” so much back then, but it is facinating to read the stories. Even just reading the comment list, I see the names of some very long ago business and personal friends and it brings back many memories, mostly good:-). Much success to you in all your future endeavors.
Peggy/The Angels/The Delicates

To a long lost friend. Having been part of your life in those wonderful early days and finally reconnecting after all these years I truly choke up with emotion. Oft times life is a bitch but through your incredible pain your presence, your insight, your memories have brought joy to the so many people you’ve met along the way.

“Artie, I’m loving your book and literally could not put it down until Chapter 22 when nature finally came knocking after my drinking an inordinate amount of coffee. Your writing style is lively and conversational. In a previous incarnation as a journalist I learned to “Write like you talk unless you’re from the Bronx.” It appears that you have come along and totally dispelled that adage. I love the story about your standing-up and telling a roomful of people that you don’t have to accept being exploited merely because you’re black; and nobody in the room was even aware of your racial make-up. Too funny. So much for the argument, right?”

For the last three years I’ve been writing my book about my 50 years in the music business. I was warned not to write about certain people, certain companies, and certain things which made me want to tell more.

As my blog became more popular with over 1,870,000 VIEWS, I began to get bolder and relentlessly went after large corporations and social networks until they discontinued some of their questionable practices.

I’m proud to have been the first to write about Tommy James’ shocking book, “ME, THE MOB, AND THE MUSIC” and have an exclusive no-holds barred three part interview with my pal from the past and former label mate…probably the only such event where the participants didn’t have to go into the witness protection program right after the show!

In my book, “I DID IT FOR A SONG”, I write about my first hand experiences songwriting (Aretha, Michael Jackson,Tony Orlando, Cher, etc.) producing (the Kingsmen, The Shirelles, the Guess Who) and getting hits for Warner Brothers Music (“You’re 16″, “R+R Heaven”) and Irving/ Almo music (“I Honestly Love You”, “Our Day Will Come”).

I share my private stories about, Carole King, MORRIS LEVY, Neil Bogart, The BEATLES, Jimi Hendrix, SCOTT SHANNON, Eagles, MICHAEL JACKSON, Bert Berns, THREE DOG NIGHT, Alan Freed, BOBBY DARIN, Brian Wilson, PAUL WILLIAMS, Murray The K, TOMMY JAMES and the Shondells, Olivia Newton-John, HERB ALPERT, JERRY MOSS, Don Kirshner, RICK JAMES, Rolling Stones, ELLIE GREENWICH, Clive Davis, Barry White, DAVID GEFFEN, Marvin Gaye, QUINCY JONES, The Rolling Stones, DAVID BOWIE, Phil Spector, AND DOZENS MORE!

“One of my dreams comes true when Ben Raleigh takes me up to Hill and Range Music to meet Freddy Bienstock, who runs Elvis Presley’s publishing companies.  He asks us if we’d like to write a song for Elvis’ next movie, “It Happened at the World’s Fair”.

I know this is my big chance, and Ben and I reach for the stars. We write a song for Elvis to sing on top of the Space Needle in Seattle, “Where Do You Want The World Delivered?”

Although Elvis loves the song, and we’re told we’re definitely going to be in the film, we’re knocked out at the last minute by a beautiful songwriter, who is on the set and has Elvis’ ear (among other things).

Ben and I continue for the next year and a half to work on Elvis movies. Writing for, “Kid Galahad”, “Fun In Acapulco”, and “Kissin’ Cousins”. Unfortunately, none of our songs are used, but I treasure the advance checks we would receive from Gladys Music, which had Elvis’ picture on them! I swear I’ll never cash them unless I really need the money, which is usually an hour or so after I have the check in my hand.

I had no dealings with Freddie Bienstock for years until The Jackson Five abruptly left Motown and was short on cash; I helped a grateful “Papa” Joe Jackson get a $25,000 advance for the group’s world wide sub – publishing rights from Freddy…even though Michael and his brothers weren’t writing very much at the time.

A few years later when the world-wide sub – publishing hadn’t paid off for Freddy, he blamed me for wasting his $25,000. Then when Michael explodes with the “Thriller” album, Freddy claims all of the mega-songs that Michael has written falls under his contract!

Now I had a once grateful “Papa” Joe mad at me for helping him get “a paltry $25,000.advance” and Freddy whom I expected to be grateful, never returns any of my phone calls ever again.”
