When a human passes away it takes three days for the spirit to leave the earth and make a transition to the other side. When a pet passes away the process takes the same amount of time.
The pet is more confused at first, but becomes more accepting of what’s going on when they are reunited with their animal friends on the other side, who are there to help with the crossover. The pet is happy to go back “home”, unless they’ve formed an exceptionally strong bond with their earthly caretaker, which makes them want to stay on earth a little longer to make sure their “human” is going to be all right without them.
We can be assured, that these little spirits will be watching out for us for the rest of our lives. I can attest that many long gone animal friends have come back to me in dreams, meditations, and semi-darkened rooms, during times of stress or loneliness and helped me get through the agony of it all.
As I’m sitting on the patio by the hummingbird feeder my little pal, Larry, flies by and I can almost feel his wings sympathetically touch my knee as I weep for my little pal Streaker, who had to be put down a few days ago or face a long painful illness.
When my friend, Allan Rinde moved toNashville to get married, he asked me to take care of his little calico cat, Streaker and her boyfriend, a 23 lb. white tom called Whoppy, because his future wife was allergic.
For the past 14 years Allan has paid for their food, toys, and thousands of dollars in medical expenses. When Whoppy passed two and a half years ago, “Streak” and I became closer sharing my pillow, as well as a place at the dinner table. About a year ago, after Allan got a divorce he offered to rent me a couple of rooms in his house in Palm Springs, where we’ve lived ever since.
Although he hadn’t spent much with her over the last decade, Streaker loved Allan and when we all lived together “Streak” would sit in front of his computer, all night long acting as his assistant. While Allan spoiled her with gourmet cat food, exotic toys, and even a recirculating water fountain, I kept her paws on the ground by yelling, “ARE YOU CRAZY?”, and sentences ending in “ucker”, whenever she got out of line.
I close my eyes, visualize her and tell her that it’s time for her to go and I’m going to be alright. Whoppy, who’s come back to escort her “home”, looks contented, but Streaker give me one last look goodbye…then sadly walks away.
I want to call out, “Don’t go!”, but the three day window of transition is closing fast and if they don’t leave now they could become trapped between here and the other side for eternity!
As I sit weeping, my little friends disappear into the morning…and a few minutes later Larry the hummingbird reappears to introduce me to his new girlfriend. He senses that this isn’t a good time, and they both bolt off into a sky full of fluffy white clouds.
As I watch them leave, I gaze up, and for a few minutes watch the clouds change forms, as clouds are known to do. I smile as I see likenesses of all the animal friends I’ve had in my life, Waldo, my parakeet in grade school, my aunt Wan’s dogs Fluffy and Queenie, who protected me from bullies, Chipper, the little spitz, who turned nasty and had his name changed to Al for Al Capone, then when he became nice again, changed it back to Chipper!
There was Walter, who led my grandmother to safety through a fire, Duke, Harold, Pete, Tippy, and of course, my little Cairn Terrier Nookie, my companion for 12 years.
Even though I know Streaker’s in good company…it doesn’t mean I’m going to miss her any less….but seeing Whoppy and Streaker playing together again in the clouds, and in my medical marajuana tinted memories is inspiring and proof positive that true love lives forever.
Goodbye my monkey friends…until we meet again.

Whenever there’s a slow news day, they’ll run a heartwarming story about a cat calling 911 and saving its masters life or a dog who saves a family by barking relentlessly during a fire. Although these heroes are certainly worthy of media attention, I’d like to pay tribute to the millions of dogs and cats who are more than just companions.
As long as I can remember I’ve had an animal in my life that’s been less of a pet and more of a sidekick. They’ve shared the joy of a new romance with me, as well as the pain of heartbreak. They’ve celebrated business triumphs with kisses and wags and helped me get through dozens of setbacks with nuzzles and licks. When you confide in a dog or a cat, you know one thing for sure…they’re not going to gossip!
In the late 70’s I brought Nookie, a Cairn terrier, over from Harrods in London and he helped me get through some pretty hard times. I remember once I came home after a hard frustrating day and laid down on my back exhausted with tears running down my face. Nookie came over, stood on my chest and dropped his favorite toy, a nasty little hand puppet name “BaBa” on my face. At first I started gagging, then I started laughing uncontrollably. I can’t think of any human who was able to change my mood faster than Nookie could; it was like having a monkey around without all the empty peanut shells.
As a tribute to him, when I was recording my album for Casablanca, Art Munson, Joe Klein and I produced a track, “Is The Puppy Hungry?” that featured Nookie and his friend Lester ( Joe’s dog ), barking in rhythm to a reggae track. When the president of the label, Neil Bogart heard it he said, ” This could sell a million records, but not on my label!” I was crushed, but Nookie and Lester kept right on playing.
Animals can make a positive difference in your morale which becomes essential if you have health problems. After sharing my life with Nookie for 12 years, he passed away. I felt lost for quite a while and didn’t want the responsibility of having another dog. 13 years ago, when my friend Allan Rinde got married and moved to Nashville, he asked me to take care of his cats, because his wife, was allergic to them.
I’ve always been a dog person and didn’t even know how to properly pet a cat. It wasn’t long, however, before they had me trained. When I had a spinal operation, my hands closed up on me and my 25 pound cat Whoppy would lie on my right hand to open it up. It wasn’t long before his girlfriend Streaker would lie on my left hand and open that one up as well. I can’t tell you how many times that touching them while they were purring calmed me down when I was stressed out. I don’t know how long they’ll be with me on earth, but I thank God for every minute we’re together.
A couple of years ago I started using acrylics to create animal portraits on quartz, which I called Petz Rock. I’m really proud of what I created. If you’d like to see some of my favorites, click onto http://artiewayne.com/petz.html

People ask me where do I find the incredible music videos I put in my articles. I tell them it’s easy and now I want to show you how I do it…for free! I also include over 150 URLs to the greatest videos on the internet, that you can enjoy over and over again, at least until they shut the amazing archives down.
A few years ago, during the Christmas season, I noticed the lack of new shows celebrating the holidays. and remembered how many great choices I had when I was a kid. There was the original “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in stop motion, A jerky “Frosty The Snowman”, which made me shiver with delight, as well as perrenial TV Specials like “Ahmal and the Night Visitors”, “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, which I always looked forward to.
Over the past few years, when I look for these Christmas shows to be broadcast over regular TV, I’m disappointed on a regular basis. I hoped cable TV would provide me with some Christmas cheer, but all that I could find were Christmas Horror Flicks like, “Silent Night, Bloody Night”, and “Christmas Evil”, where Santa Slays everyone before the last reel.
Then someone suggested, that I look for my favorites on the internet and after a little experimentation, I found that I could locate just about anything that’s ever been filmed, taped or recorded. It’s just about how to go about it.
First I Googled…Rudolf the rednosed reindeer video, and found thousands of choices. I knew the late Johnny Marks, the composer of “Rudolf”, who once told me that dozens of little films had been made based on his classic song, but only a few had been shown in the US. I narrowed my quest by googling…Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer, original video, Gene Autry…and in a matter of seconds, I had the video I was looking for. I had patience and kept going deeper into the thousands of pages that were offered, until I found what I wanted.
When I was putting up a video tribute to Elvis, I wanted to include things that people weren’t familiar with. Not only the clips from early TV shows, but outakes, screen tests and home movies. just by Googling…Elvis Video outakes, films and TV, I eventually found everything I wanted. Just be patient…and keep adding additional key words for google to look for.
I started out by making a Top Ten List, which evolved into a Top 20 list (that actually totals 25), that include Elvis’ first TV appearance, various screen tests. The extensive collection, has been praised around the world by friends and fans of Elvis, which I’m very proud of!
When I started to look for videos to go along with my forthcoming book, ” I Did It For A Song”, about my years in the music business, I didn’t expect to find many. To my amazement I found 130 already, and I’m still looking.
When my friend, songwriter, Mark Barkan (“She’s A Fool”, “The Writing On The Wall”) asked me to help him find some videos on one of his songs, “Pretty Flamingo”, I not only found Manfred Mann’s original black and white video from the ’60s, but Rod Stewart’s ’70s cover, but a live version by Bruce Springsteen, which Mark didn’t even know about.
How can a regular person not in the Music Business make use of music videos on the net? What about creating a video sound track of your life or one for your loved one?
I got so excited, about all the music videos available, that I made and posted on my blog lists for holidays and special occasions.
