ONE OF THE HAPPIEST TIMES OF MY LIFE WAS WHEN I MOVED TO CALIFORNIA AND WORKED AS A SONGPLUGGER FOR VIVA MUSIC (WHICH WAS LATER BOUGHT BY WARNER BROTHERS). I WORKED WITH SOME OF THE MOST TALENTED SONGWRITERS IN THE BUSINESS, KENNY LOGGINS “THIS IS IT”, DEWAYNE BLACKWELL (“MR. BLUE”), JERRY CAPEHART “SUMMERTIME BLUES”, AND A TALENTED NEWCOMER WHO HADN’T HAD HIS FIRST HIT YET…ALAN O’DAY.
IN ADDITION TO KNOWING HOW TO PUT A POP SONG TOGETHER ALAN KNEW HOW TO MAKE INCREDIBLE DEMOS THAT SOUNDED GOOD ENOUGH TO BE ON THE RADIO AND WERE COPIED MORE OFTEN THAN NOT BY ARTISTS AND PRODUCERS! EVEN THOUGH I COULDN’T DRIVE AT THE TIME I GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I HEARD “THE DRUM” I HITCHHIKED TO METROMEDIA RECORDS AND GOT BOBBY SHERMAN TO CUT IT!
WHEN I HEARD “HEAVY CHURCH”, A RECORD “SNUFF GARRETT HAD PRODUCED ON HIM, ONCE AGAIN I GOT EXCITED AND HITCHHIKED OUT TO THE VALLEY TO RITCHIE PODOLOR’S AMERICAN RECORDING STUDIO…WHERE I GOT HIM TO CUT IT WITH 3 DOG NIGHT!
WHEN I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO DRIVE ALAN COULDN’T WRITE FAST ENOUGH TO KEEP WITH THE DEMAND FOR HIS SONGS, THE LAST PROJECT ALAN AND I WORKED ON WAS “ROCK AND ROLL HEAVEN”. JOHNNY STEVENSON WROTE A SONG WITH A CHORUS THAT I LOVED, AND I ASKED HIM TO COLLABORATE WITH ALAN ON THE VERSES AND CREATE THE SONG YOU ALL ARE FAMILIAR WITH TODAY.

In 1974, one of the first calls I receive after taking over as head of IRVING/ALMO music is from my friend, Olivia Newton-John who is looking for material. Except for their hits, I know very little about the catalog, so I hold my first casting meeting to take suggestions from everyone in publishing. The professional staff, secretaries and mailroom boys all pitch ideas to me.
After listening to quite a few songs, one catches my attention, “I HONESTLY LOVE YOU” by Jeff Barry (“TELL LAURA I LOVE HER”, “DA DOO-RUN-RUN”) and Peter Allen (“I GO TO RIO”). I’m late for an appointment so I only have a chance to hear one verse and barely scan the lyric. We ship it to London as quickly as we can along with an idea I have, Brian Wilsons “GOD ONLY KNOWS”, from our Beach Boys catalog.
When Olivia comes over to my office with her producer, John Farrar, and plays a dub for me, I‟m almost in tears. The first thing I say to them is, “This should be the Record of the Year!” You can imagine my surprise when MCA records doesn‟t even want to put it out as a single because, “It‟s too slow!” That‟s when Jerry Moss let me use Harold Childs, and his top A&M record promotion staff to break it out of the album.
Not only does “I HONESTLY LOVE YOU” become a multi-million platinum seller, it becomes the record of the year in 1974!

EPILOGUE..I FLEW BACK TO NY FROM LONDON WITH A LETTER FROM OLIVIA AND JOHN FARRAR TELLING THE GRAMMY PRODUCERS THAT I WAS TO ACCEPT THE GRAMMY ON THEIR BEHALF IF THEY SHOULD WIN RECORD OF THE YEAR. JUST BEFORE THE TELECAST THE GRAMMY PEOPLE ASKED ME TO LET PAUL SIMON, ART GARFUNKLE, AND JOHN LENNON ACCEPT THE AWARD “BECAUSE IT WOULD HELP THE RATINGS.” I DID , OF COURSE, AND WAS LATER REWARDED AND MADE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF RECORDING ARTS AND SCIENTISTS.

Dylan Still Rocks My World
Google Search for Bob Dylan new album: about 87,200,000 results. Google search for “new iPhone” 7,970,000,000 results. For perspective, “Topless Kate” had 685,000,000 results.
When a new Dylan album came out, back in the day, it was the talk of the town, the town consisting of radio, publications and “buzz.” No cellphones, no internet back then. Today the town has a much different geography. The iPhone rules. Even over Royal boobies. As of today, the new iPhone has been “out,” that is, announced, described, enpictured, and hyped for 5 days and Tempest has been out for about a week.
The iPhone broke the division between a telephone, a media player and a PC. The smart phone made messaging preferable to a phone call. The smart phone made the telephone nearly obsolete. (The iPhone, from most reports is actually a crappy phone but the the other functionality is irresistable. Even to me. I have an iPod Touch and a stupid phone.)
Bob Dylan broke the sentence. He broke the length barrier for airplay. He broke the mold for the pop recording artist. He broke the mold of his own persona, over and over again.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Randy Newman is weighing in on thepresidential election, and he’s playing the race card through a song he wrote called “I’m Dreaming.”
The piano tune features the refrain: “I’m dreaming of a white president.” It is full of satirical, sarcastic — and signature —Newman anecdotes about someone who votes for the president because he is white.
Newman, who is white, is openly supporting President Barack Obama. He says he wants the public to find comedic relief in the song, but to also know he’s serious about his thoughts that racism is well and alive in the world — and in the current presidential race. He called racism “the great issue of this country.”
“I felt that that sentiment exists in the country,” Newman said in an interview Monday. “I don’t know how many people you can get to admit it. I think maybe zero.”
The song will be released as a free download Tuesday and Newman is encouraging listeners to donate to the United Negro College Fund.
Newman, 68, has won multiple Academy Awards, Grammys and Emmys for composing music for movies such as “Cars,” ”Monsters, Inc.,” the “Toy Story” franchise and the TV series “Monk.” He often writes songs from the perspective of a character not like himself. “Short People,” the 1977 No. 2 Billboard hit, attacked short people. And “Sail Away” is a come on from a slave trader to a potential slave.
“I’m Dreaming” features lyrics like: “He won’t be the brightest, perhaps, but he’ll be the whitest, and I’ll vote for that.” He said as he wrote the song the lyrics “didn’t come that easy.”
“It’s delicate enough that I’m not going to offend people every which way, but I wanted to get it right as best I could,” said Newman, who added that he’s always worried there may be some backlash following the release of a song like this one.
Newman believes Obama will be re-elected in November and feels that Republican contender Mitt Romney isn’t a “serious candidate for president.”
Newman said he’s proud of how America has progressed, though, but adds that “there’s a long way to go.”
“No European country would have elected a black man,” he said. “I can’t believe it happened. I think it’s fantastic, like a step on the moon.”
The Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee said some friends told him to save the track — which he wrote a couple weeks ago — for an upcoming album, but he says releasing it now is perfect timing.
“I think it’s for the moment,” he said. “It’s not going to live forever.”

MY WHOLE LIFE I’VE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO LIVE IN PLACES THAT THRIVED WITH MUSIC. IN THE ‘50s AS A TEEN, I LIVED IN THE BRONX THE HOME OF DOO-WOP. I WENT TO SUNDAY SCHOOL WITH JIMMY MERCHANT (“FRANKIE LYMON AND THE TEENAGERS), SAW ARLENE SMITH (THE CHANTELS) SING IN CHURCH, AND WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH JIMMY CASTOR.
WHEN I MOVED TO MANHATTAN IN THE’60s, I FREQUENTED THE MID-TOWN DANCE CLUBS AND I DANCED TO THE YET TO BE DISCOVERED MUSIC OF THE YOUNG RASCALS (“GOOD LOVIN) AND THE LOVIN’ SPOONFUL. (“DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?”)
WHEN I BECAME INTERESTED IN SINGING AND WRITING FOLK SONGS, MY FRIEND AND FELLOW SONG PLUGGER PAUL SIMON INTRODUCED ME TO BOB DYLAN AND PLAYED BACK UP GUITAR FOR ME ON HOOT NIGHTS AT THE BITTER END AND GERDES FOLK CITY.
